The Opposite of Fate

B&N Synopsis:
Amy Tan was born into a family that believed in fate. In The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings, she explores this legacy, as well as American circumstances, and finds ways to honor the past while creating her own brand of destiny. She discovers answers in everyday actions and attitudes - from writing stories and decorating her house with charms, to dealing with three members of her family afflicted with brain disease and shaking off both family curses and the expectations that she should become a doctor and a concert pianist.
With the same spirit, humor, and magic that characterize her beloved novels, Amy Tan presents a refreshing antidote to the world-weariness and uncertainties we face today, contemplating how things happen - in her own life and beyond - but always returning to the question of fate and its opposites: the choices, charms, influences, attitudes, and lucky accidents that shape us all.

I am taking this from indygo88's CD Audio Bookbox. Thanks for sharing!
This book is going to Erishkigal!
This is my current 'listen in the car,' and I'm loving it. Just listened to the section where she speaks of how happy her mother became as her Alzheimer's progressed...and thought how very beautiful and very fortunate.... I lost a friend to this horror, and unlike Tan's mother, he became angrier and angrier, becoming violent to the point of trying to strangle his wife. Needless to say, at that point he had to be put in a care center. Horrible, horrible disease!
I shall post again when finished.

Happy travels!
The book arrived today. Thank you so much for sharing with me. I will lend it my GALS friend first. I just finished The Kitchen God's Wife by her.
Back from my friend. Now on my shelf to listen to.
Found that I had to keep listening. What a wonderful writer. The spirit of the book was refreshing as Amy Tan shared her life, thoughts, and feelings.

the book is here. thank you.
Beautifully written novel by Amy Tan about her life, her thoughts, and dreams.
The chapter I found most interesting is where she talks about herself as an author. Especially as others are dissecting her novels, finding symbolism where Amy never consciously wrote in symbolism and analyzing the characters and events in ways Amy never intended.
As I've discussed books I've read with others I've always wondered how much the author intends and how much is merely an interpretation of the reader.
