I'll be celebrating my 8th BC birthday on August 29th.

I was introduced to Pratchett thanks to you, fellow bookcrossers !

And this summer I'm reading the books I haven't read so far :-)

To tell the truth, I bought them all online... Er, don't tell my banker ;-)

So, all the books will be turned into international bookrings from September onwards

Arrived in the mail today, together with two others. Of course the mail also included two advanced readers copies from the Amazon.com Vine program for me to read and review, so Mt. TBR just got significantly taller. My daughter was also just complaining that she's having trouble finishing "Thief of Time", so it may take us a while to get through all three of these, but I'm looking forward to so great Discworld fun.

In Discworld, the power of the Gods is related to the number of people who believe in them and the strength of their belief. The Church of the Great God Om has tremendous power, controlling a Theocracy and building an empire by conquering neighboring states and crushing their native religions. So when Om returns to choose a new Prophet, his appearance as a tortoise doesn't match anyone's expectations. Further, it appears that only a single lowly novice, Brutha, is able to hear the voice of the God. Brutha must figure out how to fulfill his role as Prophet, while, at the same time, not run afoul of the powerful Quisition, which enforces orthodoxy within the Church.

This is a powerful satire about the distinctions between religion and faith. Pratchett clearly shows how as a Church grows, it can easily lose its way. The foundational beliefs and faith, become obscured by ritual and rules. This should be a cautionary tale for anyone who focuses on doctrine instead of belief.

My daughter is a bit overwhelmed with school work currently and isn't going to be able to read this anytime soon, so we'll look for another copy for her. I'm mailing this along to biisbsw to continue its journey.

This was a great book! One of my favorite's by Pratchett. I loved the tortoise god Om as well as Brutha. And the appearance of the God of Rats from Reaper Man which I had just finished was a nice treat. Looking forward to the reading more books by Terry Pratchett.
