I picked up this audiobook to listen to on an upcoming road trip
"At age 26, Maarten Troost decided to pack up his flip-flops and move to a remote South Pacific island. The idea of dropping everything and moving to the ends of the earth was irresistibly romantic. He should have known better.
This is the hilarious story of what happens when he discovers that the island is not the paradise he dreamed of."

J Maarten Troost, born and raised in modern civilization, packs up and moves with his girlfriend to live on a small island in the equatorial Pacific. I enjoyed the variety of learning the history of the island and it's culture contrasted with the day-to-day trials and tribulations of small island living without all the comforts of the modern world.

Received in the mail yesterday. Thanks Aberpeter!
The author tells of his experience living on a remote island on the equator. The island is not the paradise he dreamed of. The island lacks all the creature comforts of modern civilization. I don't think I could have survived living there!

I'll be keeping this one :)
Started listening today.
Alas, the final CD is too badly scratched to play, so I wasn't able to finish this book. Tears! It's quite funny.
I enjoyed listening to Maarten's adventures on Tarawa, a tropical island in the South Pacific. It's so isolated that world news is slow to come and completely out of date once it arrives - and yet somehow the song "La Macarena" has made it out here. The bizarre mix of American pop culture and traditional ways of island life makes Maarten's adventures absolutely horrible - but delightful to hear since I can take comfort in the fact that I'm not the one suffering.
