Not sure about this one at all. I enjoyed the incisive insights and turns of phrase, but it did drag so! I disliked all of the characters and couldn't empathise with any of them. It felt, strangely, a very feminine book and very much in the same genre as The Lovely Bones (which I detested). I hope it finds a more appreciative reader.

Thank you for the World Book Night Book! Curious to read it and hope I will like it a bit more
Actually, I liked it a lot. It tells the story of an escaped slave that murders her young daughter - so that she does not need to go back into slavery. Later that daughter returns as an unhappy ghost.
While not being into any mystery, I thought the metaphors of that mother-daughter-sister relationship are very strong and well conveyed in this haunted house.

I got it from wieterfeirne as part of the First Sentences Virtual Bookbox Round 5. Thanks a lot.
