They look great, but have just noticed a spelling mistake with the Orchid Thief, it says Orchid Theif, plate......
Profile Image
it says Orchid Theif

Well, yes. It's user designed, so whatever the user puts in there, gets put in there. Right or wrong.
Profile Image
designed the label with the typo so they could fix it? Personally, I would not print out or use (let alone purchase) a label that has a spelling mistake in it.

Nice thing is you can create your own, instead. :)

(And I just checked with Matt; no spell check on the labels, but he will add a reminder to check your spelling. Also will put the pricing more prominently accessible from the label entrance and the store entrance to the product.)
Profile Image
Does it say anywhere how much the custom labels cost, or do you have to go through the whole process of creating them to find out? Maybe I'm missing something but I can't find it anywhere.
Profile Image
I'm not sure how I originally got the price info, but it's there somewhere.
I've since created a bookplate and ordered it so can tell you that one is $1.00 and a book of 25 is $16.95 (with the extra stickers which is cool!). Other amounts(10, 50 or 100 I think) have different prices but I forget exactly what they are.

I stumbled on your custom label. Great idea for next year's Canada Day Release Challenge. I have ordered some.

Well, that was my original plan. But I've now almost used up the ones I ordered, so will end up ordering more. But varykino, it seems to me that you had some fabulous pics (of a dancing beaver and some flag-waving beavers that I remember) in the journal entries of your Canada Day releases over the years. Any chance of you putting those on a label? (or have you already? I haven't looked at the recent labels in a while. Maybe I should have checked first before making such a suggestion LOL). I'd certainly pay good money for those!
Profile Image
I stumbled across the custom label just recently. I did not realize I could customize my own labels. I am an analogue! I am going to give it a try.

They're lovely! You can get them prenumbered or plain/blank, too.

Do it! I just got 50 in the mail today. Some were designs others had made public and some were designs I had made with family pictures that I did not make public.

All are great!!

That would be awesome varykino because, like Pooker, I love the pics you use for your journal entries. (Of course, I love everything about your journal entries. They are always so interesting.) Please let us know if you succeed in making the custom labels.

I found pricing by clicking on the images of the labels made by others. It gave the full listing:
Order multiple singles to receive quantity discounts.
D
Pre-Numbered and Non-Numbered appear to be the same price
1: $1.00
12: $7.95
25: $16.95
50: $25.95
100: $39.95
Profile Image
Oh, I see. You can't do that from the My Label Creator page, which is where the Supply Store homepage link sends you (the one in the main part of the page). I would not have thought to click on other people's labels to find the price. It might be a good idea to make the price more obvious.

"Order multiple singles"--what does that mean? Multiple copies of the same label (i.e., "Order multiples")? To my editor brain, it means you can order one each (single) of a number of designs, like when you have things printed on moo.com.
Profile Image
To my editor brain, it means you can order one each (single) of a number of designs,

That's how I /believe/ it's meant.
I think you can pick one each from 25 different designs and it would count as 25 labels.
Won't that be cool?
Just try. You should see the final price right before checkout.
Profile Image
I did figure that I'd see the price before checkout. But I don't think one should have to go through uploading an image (or 25 images, if it is truly possible to order a bunch of different ones--that would be cool) and creating labels just to find out how much it will cost. It would be much simpler to have a price list up front.

I also won't buy things in stores if there is no price on them. :) If you want someone to buy your product, shouldn't you make it as easy as possible for them to do so?
Profile Image
You are correct, jumpingin. You can order any combination of a number of designs and images and still get the bulk discount. We apologize if the wording on the site is not clear and are working on updating it and getting the pricing in a more prominent place. 25 labels...25 different images...$16.95. Pretty cool, huh?
Profile Image
I tried mixing and matching different labels that were showing to come out to 12 labels and the price was @12.00 not $7.95.

Then I tried adding to the order to make it 25 labels (added 1 label and one $7.95 set of 12) and it came out to 20.95, not $16.95, so I cancelled the order.

Am I doing something wrong? I thought you could mix and match to get to the discounted price, per the above posting.

Can you mix and match pre-numbered and non-numbered in the same order? I was trying to order some pre-numbered for me and a few non-numbered for a friend. Is that supposed to work, or not?
Profile Image
The pricing structure is now fixed! Any combination of labels in the quantities below are subject to our bulk discounts.

12 labels @ $7.95
25 labels @ $16.95
50 labels @ $25.95
100 labels @$39.95

Profile Image
While testing the label process at 4 in the morning I made a typo...forgive me. At least the spelling issue is now on the list of bugs though!
Profile Image
In the free downloadable label files section, the second paragraph says the same sentence twice.

Edited because I forgot to say thank you for providing these options!
Profile Image
Fancy :)

However... I'd like to be able to remove labels I created (to find out how it worked and how much they were, I made some, not knowing I wouldn't be able to delete or alter them later, but eager to try them out)

Also, I'd like to make two more feature requests:
* choose a font size for the caption. The current font size is quite large, so big it wouldn't fit my test text 'Registered by Phoenix-Flight'. That's not enough characters, imho. I'd rather have a smaller font than less characters.
*be able to resize/zoom your pic. It takes the pic as is now, meaning I can scroll the pic somewhat, but it's quite limited unless I resize the pic upfront, before I upload it. (I hope I made clear what I meant..)

That said, YAY for it going live, purties! Can't wait til I can order Dutch ones :D

(oh, and can we lose the magical ponies and pixies please? Cute, but redundant)
Profile Image
Something else I just noticed: There is a 'Flag this' button. I clicked it, to see what it does. Apparently my own label has now been submitted for review. Sorry, didn't mean to do that. A hover-over alt-tekst explaining what it does would be nice :) I can't be the only one of the 'Ooh, what does THIS button do?' persuasion..

Although, if submitting it for review means it can be deleted, that would be nice, because I want to delete it, as requested feature in my previous message ;)

How do I get to see other people's creations?

For label templates, you can also become a member of the BXlabel yahoo group. There are templates in many different formats and designs.
Profile Image
Under the "Home" tab, click "My Bookplates"...there you will find Recently Created and Most Popular sliders of other people's labels. If you like what you see, you can buy 'em too!
Profile Image
and they look great, but...

Does this mean if I upload a picture of my cats or my brother or my house, anyone will be able to see it and purchase it?

If so, I'll just buy something that already shows, since I value my privacy and don't want my pictures showing for all the world to download (well, unless it's a really good picture of my cat...)

ETA: Never mind, I just saw the part about "you can make your masterpiece public so other BookCrossers can view and order it." I guess that means you have the option to not make it public too.

Does BookCrossing have any concerns about people using copyrighted images? I don't want BookCrossing to get sued if people do.

Profile Image
I can't read the label text on the order page. Can sort of guess it but to be able o view it in larger detail would be nice. Don't know how you guys can spot a typo?

As for copyrighted image, as it's for sale I think there may be problem. One time my friend created some images for uploading at cafepress and they were removed due to copyright infringement... I haven't tried creating labels but maybe there is a line where the user has to declare that he/she has right to use the image that is being uploaded?

Do the terms and conditions you agree to cover this (ie like on Facebook or Flickr)? I can't open the link so can't tell, but would hope that it requires you to confirm you have the rights to an image. That would protect the site, but leave the person who chose to ignore copyrights responsible.

I can't open the link so can't tell,

You mean our regular Privacy Policy? I can't seem to find a Terms and Conditions other than that one, perhaps if you have a link someone else may be able to open it. I just browsed quickly through the PP but I didn't see anything about it. But I doubt this is all there is, as I didn't find any rules on how to behave here either, (scamming, advertisements, etc.)

no, not our regular one. There's a link that appears in the process of creating a label which says something like "terms and Conditions" (I'm on my phone and it's a process to navagate the site, or I'd give you the specific phrase and place .) I suspect that it has the "rules", so to speak, that you are agreeing to when uploading a picture. One reasonable rule would be no theft/plagsrism of an image you don't have rights to.

Anyhow, the link needs to be live, regardless, so we know what we're agreeing to.

The Terms of Services can be found on the BookCrossing Supply Store at check out...but linking them to the Label Creator is on our to do list!

are finally back!!!! Thanks to the support team - I've been waiting for these! And I like all the other options, even customizable ones, being in the same place.
One thing I'd like for the blank labels is a bigger space to write the BCID - I don't know about the rest of you, but I have trouble printing legibly when it's that small :>)

Lots of MS Word label templates and designs at my site below, all free to download; You might find something that suits you better there. If you're printing onto plain paper and cutting out, go for the "2 per page" or "4 per page" as they tend to be larger set-ups.

Thanks, JamesUK, but I actually like the Avery 5163 blanks - I just don't like that the BCID is in a box - if it was just a blank space, it would look neater to print a number in that might run out of the box right now, given the size of my printing. Alternatively, someone could redesign the box so that it goes right to the end of the line :>)
I gave up on paper labels that needed to be glued in or taped in about 500 books ago, in favour of the Avery labels.

I don't have a smart-phone, and don't know what "QR" codes are (... yet! Off to Google them in a mo...) but if you can elaborate, I'd be happy to try and knock up a template you could use for them or something? Especially if this idea could be shared / used by others.

Interesting;

http://zxing.appspot.com/generator/ allows you to create the bar codes, then you'd need to "snapshot" the image and embed it into a label. Not that difficult, but a bit laborious to do a sheet of prenumbers one by one.

I suppose one could write some script or code (Mail merge even?) that uses the URL format;

http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?...

parsing the incremental numbers to the generator and "embedding" the result image directly into the next label etc.

You've got me thinking now... ;-)

OK, doing some research, it shows me that you could use that one "common" URL I posted above, and simply change the last digit(s) for each of your pre-numbers to "call" the appropriate image.

In the case of Word label templates, you'd then have to "insert picture" for each label, and position the resulting barcode into the label, which as I said is possible, but a bit time-consuming.

I did try looking at embedded web queries in Excel for this, but they all fail with that URL, giving a "strict parse error".

Over here in the UK, these QR codes are around, but not really mentioned or in the public "consciousness" yet, so to speak, so I'm reluctant to spend too long on it, given Word's pain-in-the-backside-edness with lining up images and the like. However, it's certainly possible to code something to call the URL and embed the image that comes back, I'm sure. Just don't have the skills personally / time to look at this myself.

Having done some more research and experimenting, the method on this page for "InsertPicture" will work, although it's a bit fiddly;

http://hubpages.com/---/IncludePicture

You would create a MS Word "mail merge" label template, and in the datasource, define a field reference for "BCID Number", entering in your pre-number BCIDs into it, and adding this to the initial label in the template. along with any other text etc., in the required place, leaving space for the QR code image too.

Then following the method on the link above, you'd then need to add in the code for the QR image to the initial label in the template.

Once the initial label is complete, you replicate this to the other labels on the sheet, so all are ready to receive the merged data.

Now, essentially, once that's done, you'd never need to do it again, and the only "work" you'd need to do every time is the next bit;

For each BCID / QR code you want to create, you'd have to go to a site like http://zxing.appspot.com/generator/, generate the QR code for your journal URL, (like http://www.bookcrossing.com/123-4567890), then save the QR Code image to a local folder on your PC, using the BCID number as the file name, following the instructions in the tutorial.

So, again, it's certainly feasible from a Word point of view; it's just the time it takes to "create" the codes, right-click and save them, then run the merge.

If you or anyone is interested in this, I'd be happy to upload the examples I've created to my site for download?

FWIW, the London Evening Standard newspaper had a nice little article all about how SR codes are taking off now. You can view the article online, but you have to register first. See http://standardonline.newspaperdirect.com/ and look for the edition dated 22/11/2010, and it's on page 33. I've not got an account with them myself, and haven't been able to find the article online as yet anywhere else.

The main thing in it was that Bit.ly are now offering a free QR code generation service. See http://code.google.com/---/ApiDocumentation#QR_Codes ;

/quote

QR Codes;

<i>"To generate a QR code, simply append .qrcode to the end of any bit.ly link. For example, the following URL: http://bit.ly/3eI7.qrcode returns a QR code for the bit.ly link to this page."</i>

/endquote

So here's another way you could easily create codes for labels, if you wanted.

If you, or anyone wants a copy of the article in pdf / jpg format (1MB scan), send me a PM with a valid email address, and I'll forward it.

They're still yours to use. Any prenums already allocated to you won't be affected if your wings go away - you just won't be able to download more until you get winged again.
