I was passing on a book to someone I didn't know, sending texts back and forth to set up a handoff, and was trying to think of a way to casually and concisely explain all the stickers and things in the book without sounding like a fanatic. The best I could come up with is "book tracking game". But it isn't really a game. A "book tracking website" sounds like government surveillance. "Book traking club" maybe?
How would you describe Bookcrossing in just a few words?

If I may be so bold to buy a symbol for $50:

Book tracking / sharing.

Good one. I'll accept the symbol lol

My friends say the same :-)

The German language has the advantage to create really long nouns by adding them. That way I only need 2 words ;-)
lebensverändernde Buchreiseverfolgungsinternetgemeinschaft

That does say it all!

I don't suppose "not addictive - honest!" would be helpful...

{snerk!}

I like the German alternative, but if I had try try for three English words I'd bid for a hyphen and use "fun book-tracking site" - though that doesn't really convey the whole idea.

That works pretty well as a headline. I can always explain more if they show an interest.

It sounds odd , but.. came spontaneously :

"Books love serendipity"

Agreed as well. Really good definition.

random book giving

or maybe

hoping words reach

I don;t know. Four or five words would be easier ;)

Fun

This is a cool exercise, because I think BC means different things to each person. Some people are in it for the hunt, some love releasing books, some enjoy sharing stories, some like to follow the books' journeys online. And I'm sure there are many more motives!
Here's my go at the three-word description:

I'll say : sharing, generosity, friends.

New books, friends!

That more or less covers it.

That sounds about right!
