especially some of the old paperbacks. I generally enjoy the old paperback covers of other genres, too. They're often unique and just... weird and interesting.

pretty cool

Does anyone else look at all the cover options on Goodreads and pick the prettiest/most evocative rather than the actually edition read? Also, I HATE when kindle automatically updates the cover to the movie version! grrr

Heh! I don't do that very often, but on a few occasions I have opted for the cool cover over the real one.

I do like me a pretty row of covers on my profile page, and sometimes go to some trouble to put my books-registered and books-released into a sequence that will leave the six best covers showing. That changes too quickly to keep up for very long, but it pleases me when I get a nice array!

I don't use Goodreads much at all, though I still have an account, but there as on BC I'm very particular that the cover image matches the actual cover in my possession, and I'll do Google image searches and upload my own when I can't find it. When I get a book from another BCer that shows a different cover, I'm always a little sad that I'm not able to change it!

I don't have a kindle but even in paper copies of books I tend to not prefer the movie tie-in prints, so I'm with you here.

I scan the correct cover into my JE. It doesn't affect what's seen on my Profile, BookShelf, the sidebar etc but at least I know the book's history contains its correct cover art somewhere!
ETA An example:

In this instance the actual cover is rather less attractive than the one shown - but it's a matter of accuracy . . . . :-)

Yes, I do this too, both with books that show a different cover image like this one - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/#26624676 - or those that don't have a cover image at all, like this one - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/#13415805

For one thing, knowing what the actual cover looks like can help me find the physical book if I see it on my BC shelf and then go looking for it! :p

Me too. I always change it to the correct cover. Through a LibraryThing image, a search on Google, or as last resort uploading from the cell phone. That comes last as the color isn't as accurate, usually pretty washed out.

I thought when I got my last printer that has the scan function that's what I'd use it for, but I never figured out how to find the cover image after I scanned it and put it where I needed it, so I just take a picture if I can't find it online.

I always try to get the correct cover image, and I use the scanner function on my printer a LOT for exactly that reason. Unfortunately I didn't do that in the beginning, so now when I find one of those older books on my shelf with no cover image, I'll try to add the right one if I can remember. Otherwise, if I really don't know which one it was, I'll pick the one I like best.

Taking a picture with your phone - what a good idea! Why didn't I think of that?

This prompted me to go find this post: http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8881029

Note: that last line is important. I didn't have any luck with it before, but I did manage to pull it off for a number of books tonight. :D

ALSO: If you have a book that has passed through my hands and the cover image doesn't match the actual book, there's a good chance I've put a scanned cover image in a journal entry. So if you have the book, you may be able to use the trick above to update the picture: right-click on the correct cover image, then save it to *someplace you can find on* your computer (sorry, I don't know how this works if you're using a phone), and upload. :)

Oh, hyphen8, this is great news! It will be unreasonably satisfying if I can get this to work - thanks for sharing it!

That is a striking cover!

I do sometimes click on the sidebar entries on the strength of an interesting and/or weird cover - though experience has taught me that the appeal of the cover may have no relationship at all to whether I'll enjoy the book itself. But sometimes it works out: here's a recent example of a book that I was drawn to for its cover-art, and that turned out to be worth the effort:

https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13776117/

There are also the many cases where an attractive cover actually has nothing to do with the story at all, such as this one for Verne's Around the World in 80 Days:

Oh, that one does look interesting. I would've given it a second look too!

I haven't seen the movie, but my folks had the record album of the soundtrack, which prominently features the hot air balloon. ;)

At least it's an *attractive* cover. Sometimes the art has very little to do with the story...and it's worse when it isn't not all that terrific either.

Cover art sometimes alters whether I pick up the book or not.

When registering, I try to match the cover of what I have (which may not be what pops up), now that I know how to change mine.

Here's a recent find that I picked up on the strength of the cover art:

Home Place ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14709828 ), which turned out to be a really charming children's book about imagining who used to live in a long-vanished homestead.

Wow, there are so many I don't really know where to start! But here are some:

I think this one is gorgeous. In fact, I bought it primarily because of its design and illustrations. It is graced with black-and-white photographs by Rocky Schenk, images which in their intended blurriness are reminscent of watercolors. Interspersed throughout the book are full-page translucent sheets with details from paintings of Vermeer. Unfortunately, the text doesn't live up to it.

This one seems to me to be as ghostly as the title, and I love the cat:

http://pics.cdn.librarything.com/---/b0fbc932f0020a5596c73306c41444341587343.jpg

This one is stunning, and the book is filled with images of other magnificent covers:

Acquired a few books today, partly on the strength of the cover-art:

Throne of Jade ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14733550/ ), with its handsome, stylized cover

The Escher Twist ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14432657/ ), with its Escher-style graphic weirdness (and the sneaky skull at the bottom of the image)

Willard and His Bowling Trophies ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14703975/ ), with a cover that's just... odd!

An other cover for this book I see around is a woman's face. This one somehow seems creepy to me, I don't like it much.

The first one is very pretty. However, I think IQ84 is a rather creepy story and the second cover is fitting. Here's a link to the cover designer talking about that particular design. https://io9.gizmodo.com/---/chip-kidd-talks-about-designing-the-cover-for-haruki-murakamis-new-novel-1q84

The designer, Chip Kidd, did a Ted Talk that's pretty interesting where he talks about, of course, book cover design and in particular, I liked learning about how he designed the Jurassic Park cover.

Edit: the second link also talks about the IQ84 cover; it's been awhile since I watched the Ted Talk.

Interesting, thanks for the link. I haven't had a chance to open this version of the book, so hadn't realized there are layers and inside pages artwork. I think some paperback editions kept just the book cover though.
All that said, I still prefer the other cover. And I didn't find the book creepy, just very very weird lol

I hadn't seen that version - very nice. Also, for some reason seeing the author's name in Greek and figuring it out made me happy. :D (I haven't read the book and didn't remember who wrote it until I looked at the cover more closely.)

Yeah, I thought that one was weird too. But maybe it works with the book?

the one for
The Final Testimony of Raphael Ignatius Phoenix by Paul Sussman .
Every small drawing in front and back cover has a special meaning in relevance with the book. But you really have to read it first in order to make the connection with the plot...

The lettering is embossed and there is a brightness/reflectiveness? to the cover that you don't get from the digital picture.

Here's the entire dust jacket, minus some finished text, etc.
