Thought I might try to do a book set in each of the 50 states this year.

Anybody want to join me?

Edit: meant to say, suggestions/recommendations welcome!
Profile Image
But I haven't got any ideas at the moment...
Profile Image
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/3795525

I don't think any of us finished it -- finding a book set exclusively in one state was surprisingly tough. And nobody could find anything they wanted to read for Delaware! I think I ended up reading a guide to the DuPont family estate or some such. The best part of the challenge was the side plan where we made a recipe from each state as we read the book from that state.

Best of luck, hyphen8. I'm already overbooked with challenges for 2009, or I'd join.
Profile Image
I don't want this to be too hard, so I'm going to say they don't need to be set *exclusively* in one state, just primarily.

In other words, if the characters are in Louisiana and during the story they take a trip to Alabama, that's ok, as long as most of the action takes place in Louisiana. :)
Profile Image
Bill McKibben's short book "Wandering Home" - a journey by foot covering Vermont and upstate New York, that should knock off Vermont for the list.
Profile Image
I started this challegen two years ago. and yes the receipes were fun.

It did take me 2 years to finsihed as I had to read other books for classes I was taking.

If someone were to go through my books they should be able to find the names of books set in the various different states.

Good luck and enjoy. I learned alot about the various states and meet some great BCers who I have on my friends list.
Profile Image
I'm doing a challenge for a yahoo group and it was suggested that we keep track of the states we visited as part of it so I was excited to see that you are doing it here as well!

Thus far I have read books that take place in 24 states and the District of Columbia. I haven't kept track of which books, just the states.
Profile Image
so you can troll through this thread in search of titles for the states you're missing. :)
Profile Image
Thanks Hypen8, I'll do that.
Profile Image
"McGowan's Retreat by Rob Smith starts (and is concerned with the goings on) in Elkhorn, South Dakota! It eventually moves to Ohio, but if that would count, let me know and I could probably get you a copy for your 50 state challenge. Personally, I love the book. Let me know!
Profile Image
I started that one and yes I did finish them all. The receipes were great fun. I am still exploring receipes from bed and breakfasts from each of the states. My cooking time is quite limited.
Profile Image
(Editing to add links)

I know of lots, but these are the ones that are on my bookshelf (almost all have been released, but at least they'll be something to look for...)

As I add books set in Hawaii to my bookshelf I'll try to remember add them here too.

but here are a couple of suggestions ...

Alice Kimberly's Haunted Bookshop mystery series (sort of Ghost & Mrs. Muir-ish) is set in Rhode Island

"Journal of a Solitude" by May Sarton is about her life in New Hampshire

Profile Image
Sounds interesting. I'll give it a try.
Profile Image
I might read my American Heroes set of romance novels. There are 50 books and each one is set in a different state. :) On the other hand I might just leave them on top of the bookshelf ... I find it comforting that I have 50 books to read just in case I run out of Mount TBR. :) LOL
Profile Image
Always nice to have a backup plan - you wouldn't want to *run out* of books! ;)
Profile Image
Didn't Dana Fuller Ross write a series about the US? I seem to remember reading them in my teens... Wagons something... I forget which one it starts with. Of course, John Jakes - read him about the same time - wrote The Kent Family Chronicles - all having to do with Revolutionary War thru annexation of Texas.
Profile Image
I don't think they're in the attic any more, but I know Mom read most of them, and I read several.
Profile Image
> Didn't Dana Fuller Ross write a series
> about the US? I seem to remember reading
> them in my teens... Wagons something... I

Ross wrote the Wagons West series, the first book is called Independence, then each successive book's title is a State name. I've read the first two books and have collected most of the series to work through someday, but I don't think I'm up for a challenge right now!
Profile Image
I read them all, then he started another similar series on the Holts and I read most of them, but didn't finish (I think I read all but one or two). Fascinating take on history, but enjoyable nonetheless

Ooooo chocolate... ummmmm
Profile Image
> > Yeppers here is a photo. >
> http://flickr.com/---/

> Ooooo chocolate... ummmmm

I had to go back and look for the chocolate!!! LOL

How cool that the set spells American Heroes like that! Wow!
Profile Image
My eyes found the chocolate first, then the books... and I'm jealous. Those are better bookshelves than mine!!!!
Profile Image
> Ooooo chocolate... ummmmm

Sorry to disappoint but it isn't *actually* chocolate. LOL It is a chamois M&M that sits a top your computer screen to be at the ready whenever the screen needs a cleaning. It was a Christmas gift to my husband and he hasn't been in to the office yet to be able to use it. But I didn't realize it was in the photo. ;) That is only the top of one set of bookshelves ... I have many and lots and lots of books!
Profile Image
There is a book about the state quarters providing information about each state and why the depictions were chosen. Would be an interesting accompaniment to this challenge.
Profile Image
What a marketing gimmick!

Nice shelves, and some good stuff on them too! ;)
Profile Image
LOL! I just found a couple at the thrift store tonight....right before I read this thread. I think I have about 5 of the states.
Profile Image
I've started reading books set in America and I have read the Emporer's children set in New York About to start Friday night lights(texas) and Midnight in the garden of good and evil (Georgia). Is there anywhere to write it up or shall I just start my own excel doc.
Profile Image
This is sort of an ongoing challenge - you can set your own pace. :)

I've posted my list here: http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/5961249

Other people are keeping track in other ways. I believe CollegeLady had an Excel spreadsheet and sent me a copy, so you could check with her...or I can look to see if I still have it.
Profile Image
I would recommend for South Carolina any book by Dorothea Benton Frank.
Profile Image
I'm going to try to finish in 2009, but you can make it open-ended if you like. :)

Kaye Gibbons

I recommend her book "Ellen Foster" - she nails the protagonist's "voice" - perfect bullseye.
Profile Image
Wait, I think I read that at some point....

Yep, I did. http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/4180210

Can't remember where it was set, though. Was it North Carolina also?
Profile Image
Just a few suggestions to help you with your last books. . . (these are the ones I read)

Alabama: Scottsboro, Ellen Feldman (I picked this one up having no clue that it was based on real events. I'm an Ellen Felman fan and she didn't disappoint me with this book. It was tough to read in parts, but well worth it)

Delaware: Hawkes Harbor, SE Hinton (I found this one after doing a search in my local library's database for Delaware. Not many choices so I grabbed this one. It's a creepy little story that I'm still not sure if I loved or hated. I would suggest looking at the review on amazon.com)

Hawaii: Molokai, Alan Brennert (Lovely, intriguing story about a girl that grows up on Molokai, the leper colony. I don't usually go for historical fiction, but I loved this book)

Iowa: Dewey, the Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World; Vicki Myron (A wonderful story about a special kitty in a small dinky Iowa town. Having lived in Iowa for a bit, I enjoyed the descriptions of the town. Being a cat person, I fell in love with Dewey and the people that love him. Plus, its set in a library. . . )

Washington, DC: A lot of James Patterson's Alex Cross books are set in DC. If you like Patterson (or mystery/suspense books) and can handle descriptive murder scenes, pick one of the Cross books up.

Hope that helps! I would offer any of these books to you if they were mine to offer. I've been utilizing the library a lot lately.

Arizona is already going out as a RABCK, but if anybody wants Strawberry Girl (Newbery winner set in Florida) let me know...

It's "Nineteen Minutes" Jodi Picoult.
Profile Image
I did tis same challegne 3 years ago. The only book that was the same between you and I was Kansas. i enjoyed learning about the various states, I hope you did also.
Profile Image
I've got Washington covered but that's it. Guess I need to get busy! :)
Profile Image
Feel free to set your own timetable - I think some of the other people might be doing that. :)
Profile Image
lucy-lemon, it looks like there are two of you in the UK giving this a try: maybe you can work together? (UlrikeW is the other.)
Profile Image
Profile Image
I think I'll make the effort to get it done in a year. Are there any "rules" or stipulations on what books we read?
Profile Image
the majority of the book must take place in that particular state.

So if your book starts and ends in New York but most of it takes place in Chicago, you'd count it for Illinois.

Other than that, I think it's pretty flexible. I'm noticing that this challenge makes me pay more attention to the setting of the book as I'm reading. For instance, I probably wouldn't normally notice that I read two Texas books in a row. :)

Oh, and it's nice if you post periodic updates here so we can see how you're doing and what you're reading. (And get ideas for our own choices.)
Profile Image
it would help the rest of us if you're willing to post a list of suggestions for your home state.

I've posted mine above. :)
Profile Image
http://www.bibliotravel.com/

You can search for country/place and it gives you some suggestions of books set there.
Profile Image
It will be helpful for the 6 books, 6 countries, 6 continents reading challenge too, so I'll post it there. Thanks very much!

As far as I know, these are the people participating...in alphabetical order:

CollegeLady (California)
hyphen8 (Hawaii)
jumpingin (Canada)
lovestoreadinmo (Missouri)
lucy-lemon (UK)
madmegzy (UK)
mrsboknows (South Carolina)
spaceystacey (New Jersey)
UlrikeW (Germany)

Let me know if you want your name added to the list (or taken off).

There might be prizes along the way for reaching milestones. We'll see. :)

It's going slow. I'm working through bookring books that are set in other countries! If I wasn't doing this challenge, you know all the books would be set in US states. . .ha ha. So far I've covered California (One More Time, Carol Burnett) and Washington (the Twilight series). I am enjoying trying to figure out which books to read to meet this challenge though.

I keep forgetting to recommend books set in my state, South Carolina. Anything by Dorothea Benton Frank or Mary Alice Monroe would be worth picking up. Phyllis Whitney has one set in Charleston too. . .Woman Without a Past. If you've never read Phyllis Whitney, I highly recommend her. Her books are mystery/suspense with very subtle romance (which means there is a love interest but it doesn't take over the story). She's written multiple books, all set in different states.

maybe you should join the 6 books, 6 countries, 6 continents challenge.

or if you're *really* ambitious, there's always the Olympic challenge!

I think this is a great idea! I'm not joining you, but fab idea!

...this is a fairly freeform at-your-own-pace reading challenge: the goal is to read (at least) one book set in each of the 50 US states.

It doesn't have to be any particular type of book, and anyone can join at any time. If your book is set in multiple states, you can choose which state you're counting it for; I'm going with the state in which the majority of the story/action takes place.

Some of us are shooting for getting it done in one year. At least one person has also read a book set in Washington, D.C. At least two of the participants live outside the US, so they've got an extra degree of difficulty to their challenge.

It's nice if you post here periodically to let the rest of us see how you're doing; if you post your list other people can see what you've read and maybe get ideas for their own reading!

Also, if you'd like to post recommendations for your state of residence, I'm sure they'd be appreciated!

Did I miss anything? Anybody want to chime in with suggestions/recommendations? Oh, yes, I'm trying to come up with some prizes for the participants..but I don't know yet what they'll be and I haven't decided when/why I'm going to award them. You'll have to wait and see! ;)

My US geography is not too bad, so I'm not doing maps, but I'm going back through my journal entries, making notes as to whether or not I've been there, etc..
Profile Image
Of course, I'm reading quite a few children's books. But I would have done that anyway, it's just that now I'm paying more attention to where they're set! :)

Don't feel bad. I've only covered two states so far! I'm working on the 1001 list and so far the ones I've read have been set in Canada. . . not helping my progress with this challenge. :)
Profile Image
Read books you like. At whatever pace suits you. :D

(I've had some books that I couldn't get into..and they would've been good for various challenges, but it wasn't worth forcing myself to read them. I don't do that now that I don't have to for school any more!)
Profile Image
Finished another. . .brings my total to 3! haha

Washington (Twilight Series)
California (One More Time, Carol Burnett)
Iowa (Dewey, Vicki Myron)
Profile Image
Ooh, I've read Twilight too! I didn't even think about the setting!
Profile Image
Sounds like spaceystacey is way up there..but it's not a race, so everybody's good. :D
Profile Image
There might be something in it for you. ;)
Profile Image
I'm getting there slowly.
Profile Image
Just because it's fun to track my progress that way. :)

If you're looking for suggestions, links to the books I've read for the challenge are in the message "hyphen8's list" above.
Profile Image
Not exactly thick on the ground, so thought I'd throw in the only book I can recall reading set there!

The author is a lesbian, but I wouldn't call it a "gay" book ...

http://www.amazon.com/---/ref=sr_1_1?...
Profile Image
Still, I do need a Delaware book... :)
Profile Image
I think it's a Biblical name - it's pronounced Ray-ho-BUTH in DE, but the town in MA is Ray-HO-buth.
Profile Image
I'm not going to get it done in a year, I bet, because I read other things too. I've got two states so far:

Maryland: Digging to America by Anne Tyler
Virginia: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
Profile Image
http://www.amazon.com/---/0061470902

Actually a decent read, although not all the entries held my attention
Profile Image
For people in a hurry, right?

Sounds interesting, actually..much better than my little "Book of the States" - which I won't recommend because I know it's not always been accurate. One edition had some serious errors in the Hawaii map and I ended up writing letters to get it fixed.
