#TrumpShutdown

He did it. Trump shut down the U.S. government.

President Donald Trump was sworn in on Jan. 20, 2017.
The government shutdown began on Jan. 20, 2018.

This is the 1st time in the history of the United States that the government shut down when the same party controlled Congress & the White House

Oh, come on. It's takes two to tango...and NEITHER side is willing to dance to the other's tune.

NEITHER side is willing to dance to the other's tune.

If only there were someone around who was good at the craft of negotiating, of bringing people together and getting them to cooperate... someone who mastered something we could call, shall we say... the art of the deal. Some kind of master negotiator.

... Hey, that has a nice ring to it, don't you think? But unfortunately, no such person seems to be available.

Brilliant, Moem. :-)

Someone on our news reported that someone in Washington said that trying to negotiate with trump was like trying to negotiate with Jello

"...jello..."

I think that was Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Maybe a stable genius!

Serves the Republicans right. They've been asking for this for the last ten years.
Profile Image
Considering that the Republicans hold both houses, you can't lay it entirely on the Dems.

Obama's last year in office. It's called The Final Year. It was riveting, and in a way, heartbreaking, given what this past year has been.

The word *contrast* doesn't even come close:

I agree with Moem, and that there could also actually be a real TrumpShutdown. Of HIM, totally.

The last funding bill was not extended by the deadline last night at midnight, so all non-essential government services are shut down. Essential services, air traffic, TSA, border patrols, members of the military still work, they will not get paid until a funding bill passes. And while they do work, many times support services are civilian and are not working. If you are on Facebook, Jim Wright is retired after being career military and has an essay on how the shut down does impact military. https://www.facebook.com/---/1576496869052377

I read that the people who actually do get paid after a government shutdown are, well, the senators...

Maybe if they also didn't they would be much more inclined to negotiate.

My understanding is that all will get paid eventually.

This is true. From the news here I hear that senators get paid, not eventually. I don't know the average saving quota in the US. I could cope with this for a month, using withdrawable savings.

It also means that our national parks are closed, and any programs they might have are cancelled.
It means that most of the workers at government agencies are furloughed and do not work during a shutdown. Since my employer, my job, has a lot of interactions with the Environmental Protection Agency, it means that some things my company counts on won't get done in a timely fashion, which could have an impact on our business.

I was in Hawaii in October 2013, we couldn't tour Pearl Harbour because of the government shut down. It was disappointing but we went to see the Missouri ship (this was open as it is run by the Navy with volunteers).

a clip was played from a voice mail that one would hear if one were to phone the White House right now. The recorded voice says that they are sorry but no one can take the call because the Democrats are holding the govt hostage at the moment.

As if the republicans have nothing to do with anything that is going on.

So childish. But I suppose that shouldn't be surprising, given the leader ...
