History geeks: a "friendly tournament featuring the ancient game of Ur":

Yes, yes, it's from the History Blog again, but it's so very cool! And not merely because the blogger is so wildly excited about it all:

http://www.thehistoryblog.com/---/46330

The article's about an upcoming lecture at the Getty museum in California, by expert Assyriologist Dr. Irving Finkel (who, from the photo, looks a LOT like a good friend of mine, fluffy white beard and all). He can sight-read cuneiform, which is awesome in itself, but in addition to his lecture he's hosting the afore-mentioned tournament for the Royal Game of Ur, "a stone, shell and lapis lazuli board game from 2600 B.C." - not quite the oldest game known, but definitely up there!

I just saw that, and I WISH I were in LA! Or that the Oriental Institute here had thought of getting him to come.

Ah ha! I have an Ur board game. I've never been sure how close it is to the original in rules, but they make claims for the instructions having been based on the original (i.e., as close as could be ascertained).

I'll have to dust it off and play again in honor of Dr. Finkel.

The History Blog has just posted a video of Dr. Finkel in a private game: http://www.thehistoryblog.com/---/47491

Enough practice and you could challenge Dr. Finkel to a match!
