Thanks for deleting the test bookplate.

Further findings:
1) The secret drag feature does work for me. :)
2) Ha! My image is NOT the right shape. I totally failed to realise it had to be square. *facepalm*

3.a) Having shut down the BookCrossing tab and then opening it again the Home > Book Labels link again did not work. And Chrome again refused to show whether the page is http or https.
3.b) The Store link still worked - and Chrome did show that it WAS https
3.c) When I returned to the Home > Book Labels link AFTER having used the Store link, the Home one worked again

Weird, weird stuff! :D

I am able to select and template and upload a picture, but I can't seem to add that picture to the template? I can add text in the final screen, but without the picture, my bookplate won't load? Any ideas?

You may need to scroll the screen a bit to see all the buttons - I think there's an "agree to these terms" checkbox and possibly other buttons needed to complete the process.

If you've made custom bookplates before without any trouble, then this may be the result of the current tweaks to the site. If that's the case, reply here.

Agree to these terms is "above" the review and submit block, so it is not a question of paging all the way down. I've decided to periodically check back with creation but I've decided that all things considered it is not worth the problems.

I've not been on the site in awhile (years really!) Just a thought, does one need "wings" to be able to create custom plates?

No wings needed for this. Which template did you use?

The trouble with the custom bookplate creator is that it's a Flash object, which is sort of like a black box: it's made in a different technology than the rest of the site, and very hard to troubleshoot. It was made for desktop and laptop computers, I don't know how mobile friendly it is.
Can you try a different browser and/or a different computer? That is generally the easiest way to solve this kind of problem.
Profile Image
FYI: iOS does not support FLASH, Android from, I believe Android ver 4.4 does not support FLASH.
FLASH is not however, by any means, a black box. Websites have for years utilized Flash. Adobe would be very much surprised to hear Flash described as such. Website designers utilize Flash daily. Basic website instruction include Flash as a matter of routine. It is the basic means by which individuals may interact with the site. I don't know of many sites that do not utilize Flash to one degree or another, Unfortunately as I am not site admin for bx I cannot access and troubleshoot the problem.

But I no longer can. I have the same problem as Aisho. A template can be selected, but the steps after that simply don't go through.

I'll give it a try on my new laptop this evening to see if it's just a matter of outdated software. Flash is up to date on this old laptop, but java isn't, and the browser has stopped receiving updates too, as I run Win XP on this machine.

I just created a custom bookplate - after updating Flash just to be sure - and at first I ran into the problem you describe, where I couldn't get the picture onto the template. I'd started the process from the "my bookplates" page under the "home" tab; on a whim, I tried going through the Supply Store page, and even though its custom-label page appears to take me to the exact same link, I was able to load the image that time. So... was it a difference in how I got to the custom-label page, or was it a timing thing (I was using a new photo that I'd only just added to my list), or is the site being tweaked even as I type, with a fix coming in in the middle of my experiment? I have no idea, but if you're still having problems and if you're accessing the custom-label page from the "home"-tab link. try going in through the supply store and see if it makes a difference.

Hey, that did the trick!

Haven't tested out the "old laptop/new laptop" theory yet, but having read your account, Gory, I tried out both ways on my old laptop, and I can confirm that, for me, going via Home>My Bookplates does not work, but going via the Store > Bookplates link works just fine. Hurrah! :D

The only problem I have is that my images are too large and they don't get automatically resized, but I think there's a thread somewhere about minimum and maximum pic dimensions for labels.
Would be good to include that info on the Bookplate Creator page, also.

EDIT: Info about sizes found in FAQ, but it says that the images should get resized automatically. Mine don't.

Gory, if this proves to be a solution that works for everyone (or just for most or many people) I will publicly kiss your feet. This problem has been bothering me like whoa, especially since I could not reproduce it.

Hey, I faced same issue with my new lap top. Pictures didn't stick when trying to access the bookplate creator through my Home Tab. So I didn't try to create new bookplates for sometime hoping the issue will be fixed at some point.
But I read this post and it worked for me too when going through the Supply store links. Thank you Gory!

On my new laptop, I can access Home > Book Labels, and as on the old laptop, I cannot get past the first step.

However, wanting to check the resizing issue I have on the old laptop, I found out that when going to the bookplate creator via Supply Store, I don't even get that. After clicking on the button Create Your Own (or something to that effect) I get: "Alternative content" and a Get Adobe Flash button. As far as I know, Flash is up-to-date on this computer. Will have to dig a bit to check if it really is.

Could you do me a favour, and keep an eye on whether there is any correlation between these problems, and the pages you're on being HTTP or HTTPS? The tech team feels that there might be a relation there.

I can't reproduce any of these problems. I use an addon called 'HttpsEverywhere'. In other words, I'm always on the https version of BC.com.

I'd gladly check, but I can't find where to set Chrome to actually show me that. Currently running Win10 and Chrome Version 56.0.2924.87 (64-bit), and the http(s) bit of the address isn't showing.

Holy eff, what a horribly bad idea. Not you, but the Chrome folks!

Nevermind... This is totally weird.

The https bits have magically appeared now - them being httpS in both instances, AND ON TOP OF THAT both ways of creating a label now work for me - well, aside from the resizing matter - still no resizing of a large image. I created a mock bookplate to test it all out, and have now marked it as inappropriate for deletion. If they still do get deleted?
Profile Image
If they still do get deleted?

Since you marked it and told me so: yes.

Is your too-large image the right shape? And does the secret 'drag me around' feature that almost no one knows about work for you?

A bit more info - when I access BookCrossing, I don't use a bookmark, I just start typing bookcrossing into the address bar, I'm offered bookcrossing.com and I hit enter. I suspect this always takes me to the http version of the website, as clicking on the little info symbol on the left of the address in the address bar tells me I'm using an unsecured website.

So the idea that the bug has something to do with http & https stands.
Because the Store is on a secure page, after I visit it, all the links after that lead to https version of the website, and they work.

Am I making any sense? :)

Yes, you are!

To keep this simple, can we conclude that:
if people are having trouble adding their picture to the template in the Bookplate Creator, they should try going through the Store and it will probably work
...?

Maybe the link on the home menu should simply be changed to the https version.

Yup, just use the Store link for Bookplates.

Maybe the link on the home menu should simply be changed to the https version.

Sounds like a good idea. :)
