MonstrousWalker's Search Engine Guessing Game #127

Guess my mystery and DeeperWeb will tell us how close you are.

Clue: More Than Just Noun.

Have a guess or a probe or two, I'll show you how they did, and then you may have two more. I try to take care of your submissions at least twice a day.

Good luck!

HITS and SHARES are what it's all about.

Hits as in how many *hits* does your guess get when DeeperWebbed inside quotes, like this: "guess".

Shares as in how many webpages do your guess and my mystery *share*: "guess""mystery".

Shares (adjusted for changes in Mystery Hits) divided by Guess Hits gives PERCENTAGE, which multiplied by Shares yields OVERALL SCORE.

Figures subject to SCALING.

(Woody hurts my neck.)

Have we exited the world of metaphor, and entered the world of hurt necks?

A guesser gives the host WHIPLASH when one of their pair finishes first while their other guess finishes last, ideally in the same category.

A guesser HURTS host's NECK when the feat falls short of WHIPLASH, as when a player guesses a first and next-to-last, or a first and last at too early a stage of the game to be impressive.

Precision evolved over time, as I would reach back for whatever I had said the last time a similar thing happened, and repeat it or give it a twist. First uses were spur of the moment.

When doing a search for "guess""mystery" the results that come up
are showing large variations. A large number will come up and if I repeat the
search a much smaller (or different) number of shares comes up.

It is disconcerting because I can't be sure which numbers to work on.

I looked at some previous guesses and the same thing is
happening. The Top four guesses Overall show variations of
more than a million shares.

I did the same searches on Google and DeeperWeb is giving
higher number of shares than Google which doesn't seem right.

I feel that the scores I've been giving you are not correct, for some guesses,
and is giving a skewed outlook on the game. I can either leave it as it is or redo all guesses with the lower shares but think it only fair to let everyone know.

I have taken photos of the different scores for certain guesses and will show them when mystery is solved.

What do you advise, MW?

Profile Image

Do you trust the second readings more? No way should DeeperWeb give you higher Shares than Google.

As it's so early, perhaps it would not be too painful to re-do the list ignoring first readings, except that could mean work wasted if your intuition rejects that list as well.

You could also move game to Google and negotiate its every-so-often scrambling of results. (Three flips out of five over a few days will usually give you a solid reading on guesses that misbehave.)

Or you can send Team on vacation.
Profile Image

Thanks, MW. It feels better now and I will continue to monitor it. :-)

king

I've already stepped in it this game, so might as well.

Sky king= God

A castle could be a haunt that is haunted by a ghost.

If "God" does well as "history" already has, I would look for words that are as old as God before seeking religious terms, or be prepared to back out of a religious theme for something more broadly applied.

If "haunt" does well, I would suspect an endpoint with strong verb presence (the likeliest 'More Than' pairing), though it might be better to pursue that end with purer nouns and purer verbs so as to not muddy the waters.

Yes, in a way, it's rather bizarre getting invitations from editors and publishers to write stuff for them. In the last year, I got five of those... (and none of them were vanity press offers).

How was the eclipse? Too cloudy here...

>_<
Profile Image

I took three days of Paid {Time} Off partly to watch the thing (and partly to spend time with now-long-distance-visiting grandson), and we had 99% moon over sun, which gave the sun the appearance of a sun-looking crescent moon. We needed 100% to freak out the birds and get darkness during daylight hours, which I hear could have been had if we had traveled to Medford, Oregon. Coolest were the hundreds of crescent shapes reflecting the sun on the road where it got through the trees. Four of us in lawn chairs looking like '50s 3D moviegoers. Grandson got bored really fast.

Actually Jools, it... it feels very awkward.

One of my publishers referred to me as a best selling author on a recent release and I really feel like I should call him out as a liar.

But I don't want to make him stop, either. @.@

MW showed some very precision guessing there. Bravo!

It now looks like the big four are only *approaching* Shares on every page. "Old" didn't knock out "world". Long ties for first in *Adjusted* Shares are fairly common when the mystery itself is common, but then Frances said these were Raw Shares, like the adjustment breaks up the tie.

I don't think Overalls will help us much, given the low ceiling. The big drop-off after fourth is something I associate with mysteries that are prominent in the current headlines. Duplicate news stories will exaggerate words that show up in headlines a lot.

I think Percentages and possibly Diffs are where we should focus, and that we should be guessing pure nouns. My bet is the mystery's muddy with several meanings cancelling each other out, and there's some noun usage, perhaps obscure like "spiral galaxy" in "spiral" that will give off the strongest scent.

Please could you explain the three phases of a larval stage in Relativity Categories, MW. :-)

1st phase: the "When-applicable" categories of Relativity are eligible to be carted out once all EXCLAM CATEGORIES (everything besides Relativity, Shares and Hits) have been exhausted. That is, once you run out of Exclam categories that crown a guess that no others have yet crowned. Initially, the only peep made is to tell the players which guess is leading, given that the guess has never been fussed over for leading in anything before.

2nd phase: A new Number One in a Relativity category that has been introduced warrants the posting of the ELITES in that category. Historically, this has meant posting the top five (as opposed to the ten that you'd post for Exclam categories) when a game is at least 100 guesses old. Before #100, the rule is one elite for every twenty guesses. Thereafter, Relativity elites short of #1 will warrant postings of the updated top five.

3rd phase: The next #1 in the introduced Relativity category warrants the posting of a Relativity LIMITED, basically a FULLSY but *limited* to guesses that score higher one way than another (See "limited" in future glossary :-D).

LARVAL STAGE graduation occurs with the next new Number One. Getting this far is taken as a sign that the Team believes Relativity to be applicable in the current game, thus warranting SHOUTING (the dishing of exclamation points) whenever a guess does well enough in that category.

(You haven't been the robot that I have, Frances, so perhaps we can bypass a detailed discussion of how loud you're allowed to shout for any given update.)
