D for December 2015

I'll post the rules now and you can put your releases here when it's time. :)

The D for December challenge will run 12/1 to 12/31 your time.

1) Books must be released during the period from December 1 to December 31. No need to sign up - join in at any time!

2) The challenge is to release books that have a the letter "D" beginning a word in the main title OR the author's name - as shown on the cover.

* Dean Koontz, John D. Rockfeller, Max von der Grün, Charles den Tex, and Charles Dickens will all count. Scott O'Dell and Craig McDonald won't, sorry.

* Main title means anything BEFORE the colon but not afterwards. For example, _Ice Bound: A Doctor's Incredible Battle For Survival at the South Pole_ doesn't count.

* Series names don't count unless they're part of the actual book title, so _Tea Time for the Traditionally Built_, while part of the No. 1 Ladies' Dectective Agency Series, wouldn't count..but the first book in the series is actually *titled* _The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency_ so it would be fine.

3) Any type of release counts: wild releases, charity releases, controlled releases, books left at OBCZs or Little Free Libraries, sent out as rings/rays, books in bookboxes, etc.

4) Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, proper nouns, and pronouns in any language count.

* Only the first letter of an acronym/initialism counts- as in D.A.R.E. but not M.A.D.D.

* Articles don't count- - for instance, if the word "the" begins with the letter D in your language, it doesn't qualify. (Besides, you should release those for the "The" challenge during November!)

* Numbers work if they're spelled out in letters ("dozen" rather than "12" or "deux" instead of "2").

* If by chance your title includes a Roman numeral beginning with D (between 500 & 899), then it would count. (See acronyms/initialisms above).

* If your language doesn't use the same sort of characters as English, it should be a word that begins with the same sound as the letter D in English (in other words, it would be transliterated into a D in for English speakers). I'll have to take your word for it at least 99 and 44/100% of the time, so please play fair! ;)

5) Multi-challenge releases are perfectly fine, and even encouraged (because they're more fun).

If you have questions, just ask. :)

Previous years:

2008 - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/376461 (202 releases)
2009 - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/412235 (756 releases)

2014 - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/512861 (799 releases)

I'll try to be a little more organized this year...I finally did the totals for 2013 and 2014! :p

I was just thinking about this challenge today, although my available stash is quite small at the moment, so I'll have to get reading!
Profile Image
I don't have a stack set aside for this one, but I'll find what I can. Thanks for hosting.
Profile Image
Good to start stockpiling now....
Profile Image
I have a little stash of the "D" books set aside
Profile Image
I have some saved!

Profile Image
Although I haven't saved any books specifically for this challenge, there's sure to be a few among the books saved for other December challenges!
Profile Image
Thank you for organizing this.
Profile Image
Love this challenge although I don't think I've many this year...& with the lousy wet weather I won't be releasing outdoors!
Profile Image
Given that D is also my own first initial I'll surely take part again. I put aside a boxful or two of D books during November.
Profile Image
So I 'll see how far I get this time.
Thanks for hosting this again.

question

This rule: * Dean Koontz, John D. Rockfeller, Max von der Grün, and Charles Dickens will all count. Scott O'Dell won't, sorry.

Would a writer called Charles den Tex count as qualifiable?', the same with: Simone van der Vlugt?
Den is the Dutch word for: van de, in one word.

Had a simliar discussion with ekorren last year: see these links and let me know what you think.

http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8379459
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8380259

I think what it boiled down to was: if the name is shown on the cover as "Charles den Tex" or "Simone van der Vlugt" *and* you would show the "d" when writing just the person's initials, then yes, it would count. Does that seem reasonable?
Profile Image
Yes it does, thank you for your answer.

I'm starting a similar challenge on the Dutch forum.

I'm starting a similar challenge on the Dutch forum.

Ok, but anyone from the Dutch forum is welcome to play here too. :)
Profile Image
We know, but the number of challenge on the Dutch forum can be more, and not everyone will/can find this one.
I'll be posting my releases on both challenges.
Profile Image
The November challenge by Camperfan on the Dutch forum helped me in releasing quite a lot of books piling up at home. I've checked the ones I still have and there are a lot of them with the D as a first letter. Quite a few Dutch ones though.

That's pretty clever. Too bad it wouldn't work at all in English! ;)

In English none of the days of the week or the numbers for the days in the month start with D...

Let's see:

Hawaiian doesn't have a letter D at all.
For Japanese, only Saturday (Doyoobi / 土曜日) would work.
Oh, and Sunday in Spanish is Domingo, and I think the 2nd, 10th, 12th, and the 16th though 19th would work.

That's about it for my language skills. :(

Profile Image

Wow.

Wow, I don't know any of those languages, my languages are limited to Dutch, English and some French and German.
Profile Image
That's about it for my language skills. :(

In German, Tuesday (Dienstag) and Thursday (Donnerstag) would work, as well as 3rd, 13th, 23th and 30th.
In Swedish, there's nothing.

I'm not going to restrict myself - I probably need basically every chance to drop off a book if I want to get rid of everything which is meant for this challenge by the end of the month ;)

Question

If I have a book in another language and it is translated in dutch, do you then accept the translated in dutch titel, which has a D in it, or does it have to be the original title, without a D?

I have used some I think. Lots of Dutch books are translations, especially the thrillers. I haven't checked for the original titles.

If the title on the cover has a D, that works. After all, I wouldn't know it was a translation unless you told me. ;)

Thank you, just to make sure.
I was probably reading to much into it :-)

To clarify: the other rules still apply. But as long as the title as shown on the cover has a D in it (and it's not an article, etc.) then it's good. :)

Sometimes even in English a book title can change: for instance the book by Vikas Swarup was originally titled "Q & A" but after it was made into a movie, later editions were published as "Slumdog Millionaire". If this was an "M" challenge, I'd count an edition of the book titled "Slumdog Millionaire" on the cover even though the original title was "Q & A". Hope that makes sense.

Your supply of books seems endless! Even labeling & registering that many books takes a lot of time, not to mention physically releasing them, journaling them, posting to challenges, *and* keeping stats. Amazing!

It's neither endless nor it's only one source ;-)

The part about sorting, registering and labeling is partly a matter of efficiency. I believe to have optimized that pretty well. I try to use not more than 2 minutes and 2 cents to get a book ready to release.

The part about "posting to challenges" - well, this is also pretty much optimized. I have a statistics system which reads and evaluates my shelf almost automatically. This also produces lists of books released, among other there's a list of releases by days. So for a challenge like this, I run the list generator, pick out the date range, delete the lines with non-matching books and after some quick editing copy-and-paste the resulting list into the challenge thread. I have other methods to deal with other kinds of challenges. Done that often enough so that I know what works for me....
