52 towns in 52 weeks challenge 2014

"The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only one page."

Bookcrossing is about letting books travel. Travel with books, travel for books. Make this a world of travelling books.
Go where you never went before, and find the surprises waiting there for you. Leave a book to be the next visitors surprise.

What's this challenge?
----------------------

The goal of this challenge is to release books in at least 52 different towns throughout the year 2014. This is an average of one per week, but doesn't need to be one each week.
You're welcome to join also if you're sure you won't make the 52 - just try and make it as many as possible.

Some rules...
-------------

* You can join the challenge at any time, and also count books you released before joining as long as they were released in 2014.
* Wild, OBCZ and geocache releases count.
* Controlled releases and meetup handovers do not count.
* Public transport vehicles can't usually be assigned to one town because the vehicle will leave the city limits. They don't count, then. Just release another book at the station and you're fine ;)
* You need to release the books yourself at the place in question. You cannot release a book "to" some place, but only "at" some place. It's always the place where the book leaves YOUR hand which counts.
* Geocaches count for the town where the box lies, also if the listing coordinates are somewhere else.
* Please include at least the following in your posts: Sequential number, country, state/province/region and name of the town, and a link to the books journal.
* Please post only one release for each town. If you release more than one book, choose one freely.
* Report as many releases as available in one posting, but don't add new towns by editing old postings because people won't notice there's something new then.
* If you like, you may also track catches.
* You're welcome to explore the release spot surroundings and report about your adventures along with the release.

I'll add the usual discussion about "what's a town" in the second post.

What's a town? Which town does a point belong to?
-------------------------------------------------

Now this is a difficult question since it depends on the local administrational structure and there simply is no universally useful definition. Learn about how the country is organized, and use your common sense.

Most countries have some kind of small(est) independent administrational unit, whatever it is called: municipality, commune, civil parish, township... there may be lots of names for lots of similar units and lots of places where they just depict something else. One of these will do. In many countries BCers before you have already chosen an administrational level to call a "city" in the BC database, and in most well-maintained countries these usually represent municipalities or similiar structure which are entirely legitimate to be called "towns" for this challenge.

However, there may be reasons why the "cities" in the BC database are not cities, towns or whatever you might call it, so better don't stick to them if they sound unreasonable. One example is that large cities like Paris, Wien, Berlin or London are often split into districts in the BC database which doesn't make the districts cities in real life. In many other countries the term "well-maintained" simply doesn't apply, because there is no region manager cleaning up the database regularily according to local conventions.

In some countries not every square metre of ground is assigned to a town. If you release in such an unincorporated area, you may assign them to nearby towns by some reasonable rule you'll have to find yourself, like going by the postcodes or simply using the closest one.

Map services
------------

You also might need to find a map service which includes the borders between towns to find where a place belongs to. If you know a reliable service for a region, you're welcome to tell us.

I'll collect the links here:

Germany - http://www.stadtplandienst.de
Switzerland - http://www.stadtplandienst.ch
Austria - http://www.stadtplandienst.at
Three sections of the same commercial map service (but simple lookups are free of charge). They show municipality borders as various violet lines (they may be dotted) in the lowest three scales. Quite reliable and precise. Where borders changed during the past few years, often outdated, though.

Globally but incomplete - http://www.openstreetmap.org
Given the very nature of OSM, they show borders exactly where and like some volunteer added them. In some areas they could import government data. Quality ranges from "missing entirely" over "rough guess" to "perfectly to the point". Use your common sense to determine whether the lines you find are useful. Feel free to contribute yourself.

A final note...
---------------

This challenge is not a competition. We do count, we do set a goal, but we don't judge anyone by the numbers reached or not. Letting it discourage you if someone elses count is far above yours is just as wrong as feeling superior if yours is the larger one. No winner will be appointed on terms of numbers.

"Towns" vary heavily in size between regions. Visiting 52 of them may be a daytrip for some people but a lifetime challenge for others. It's not your fault if you are one of the latter because your municipalities are so large that there are only a few in reach. If you don't think you can visit so many towns, you are still welcome to just try and release in as many towns as possible. If you reach the 52 during the year, you are still welcome to continue and raise your own number to astronomical heights.

Now go and explore. A whole world of wonders and surprises is waiting for you, and your books will be some of them.

so: Brussels is made up of 19 communes that each has its own mayor, town hall, police etc., would that give us a chance of 19 towns? :-)
Profile Image
and see if I can manage to release 52 books in 52 different towns/villages, or other municipalities throughout the year. Especially if it doesn't have to be exactly one each week.

Thanks for hosting this again, ekorren! I love it!

I'm in!

and already planning my first releases... aiming for 100 this year, as I live in Ayrshire, Scotland, so I'm surrounded by small towns and villages, and I'm lucky enough to have a campervan, which has a bag of books already packed for 2014 releases!... first trip is to Glasgow to fetch my step-daughter tomorrow, on the back roads for maximum releasing opportunities :-)
Profile Image
And looking forward to it! Planning my first 2014 release for just after midnight! I'm going into this year planning a baby shower for my fiance's sister, a bridal shower for my best friend, and my own wedding, so it's going to be a busy year for me! It should bring some travel too though, so hopefully I will still make the 52!
Profile Image
I'm in again !
Profile Image

Yay!

I was hoping this would start again as I'm supposed to travel quite a bit this year... should be easy to reach 52 (as long as I can find books on the way)

got some funny looks as 1 January is a strictly-observed Scottish holiday, so plenty of folks out walking, cycling etc. As everything was shut these are nearly all outdoor releases, I did use plastic bags but there was torrential rain later in the day, so I hope they survived!!

hopefully in September 2014 Scotland will vote "yes" for independence... and we can reorganise the BC database so that Scotland is a country and the Scottish regions are regions - at the moment we have Scotland as a region and then an endless alphabetical list of every town, city and village in the whole country without any regional order - drives me nuts!!

on a more positive note though - no fewer than four of my Ne'er Day releases were in virgin BC towns - Auchintiber and Lugton, which are small, rural farming settlements (I turned off the road into Auchintiber, and it has the most beautiful old cottages as well as a country inn/restaurant) and more surprisingly, Uplawmoor and Neilston, which are more sizeable commuter villages for Glasgow - I thought I'd released in Neilston before but evidently not!

I'm curious - are you bringing things to laundrettes for your job? :-)

I'm curious - are you bringing things to laundrettes for your job? :-)

No. But travelling through small towns, in winter, laundrymats are a safe place to drop where people congregate and are bored. I like to drop off books in parks outside, but when it's -9 F (-23 C) NO ONE is interested in a book on a park bench.
Profile Image
I hadn't thought about laundrettes. Thanks for the tip. They aren't very common in Australia - or maybe I just don't notice them - but there are some around the place so I'll have to keep an eye open for them. I know there's one in my suburb, but only because I usually park in front of it when KEMS and I go to our favourite local restaurant. Off the top of my head I can't think of the location of another one, but I guess it's probably just because I don't pay enough attention!

RE: I'm In

I'd love to join too, because I moved and I haven't really released books here yet. So there are many towns (or at least villages) to discover!
But when I see, that some of you have already visited 15 towns in 4 days... luckily, this isn't a competition. I go slowly and we'll see how far I'll get.

Since zip/post codes are an acceptable way to pick the town for a release that's otherwise in the middle of nowhere, here is a site with the zip code maps for the USA.

After taking a year off to restock the cupboard, I'll try again. I don't expect any international travel this year, so all will be in the USA. Most will be in geocaches, although a couple of Little Free Libraries might make their way onto the list.

1 - Charles City, VA - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11694664/ - Mother of an Army
This is my fourth time releasing in this particular cache. I've had one AF catch out of the previous three releases.

2 - Hopewell, VA - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11608861/ - Who You Know
My second release in this particular ammo can. My other release here was caught by an AF.

3 - Surry, VA - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/12388084/ - Take My Breath Away
My second release in this geocache and third in this state park. Neither of my previous releases in this park have been journaled.

I'm sorry but controlled releases do not count.
This challenge is about going somewhere and wild releasing books there.

Also, in any case I believe you can only release books at places where you actually are. No matter what happens with the book after that, the place where you release it is the place where it leaves your hands, not the place where you hope it will go to.

Braehead is one of those god-awful out of town shopping centres which stretches for miles but which is really not in one place or another... it's in Renfrewshire local authority area so although it's possibly technically closer to Glasgow, I've counted it for Renfrew (as I think the land its built on would "belong" to Renfrew)...
