Darkness to Light: an August release challenge with a cause - Starts Wednesday. Join any time even with just one release

There is an organization based here in Charleston called Darkness to Light(D2L), which the leading non-profit to end child sexual abuse through prevention education, and awareness .

The organization contacted BookCrossing and will be doing releases etc to promote awareness of the problem, give information of prevention and to help train volunteers world wide to combat child sexual abuse.

I would like to invite BookCrossers to participate in spreading awareness about and prevention of this social ill. The month of August marks the kick-off for the educational campaign for Darkness to Light. I propose a challenge to release as many books as you can during that month which in some way relate to any aspect of Darkness to Light, be it subject matter, title, author name, cover picture, or any way you can justify the relationship.

The rules are simple: All you have to do is release a book or books during August 1 through August 31. Any number of releases will do. Include in your release note something about Darkness to Light (http://www.d2l.org/) and the link to their site. You can direct future readers to go to the site, or to the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/---/DarknessToLight or their Twitter feed @Darkness2Light. Whatever you wish, but it should include the link to D2L website. That's it. Easy peasy.

I invite you to go to any of those pages as well, and let these fine warriors know you are joining them in their fight, even if it's only a small way. You're still helping.

An image of the logo, which you can download, is on my blog and in an article here on BookCrossing. I hope to get some bookplates made, once I can resize the logo, though if anyone else can do it, go for it!

or grab something from their website. Or use these labels:

Early in September, I will gather the names of all participants, and will draw randomly the screen names of three folks, who will get a small thank-you token from me. Please join us.

This challenge is dedicated to the memory of my mother, Bumma, who once told me that no one should ever have to be afraid to be with someone else. (You can read a little more about that, here: http://bookczuk.blogspot.com/---/defeating-darkness.html

Just scrolled through all my books to see what I had that might work for this challenge. I have quite a few that emphasize the positive (Day in the title, for instance), but also some that address the negative (Evil in the title). Would one type be better than another?

Whatever works for you. I just want to help these folks get the word out. Would be honored if you joined me in doing so. Thank you.

I'm in.

I've been working on putting a challenge together for Banned book week. This morning I added Speak by Anderson to the banned books list. Why? Because of graphic content. Easier to ignore the problem of abuse if you just ban the books. Let's quietly turn on the lights.

Nice tribute also.

Thank you GronnLivsstil and hyphen8, for joining us. For this challenge ANY release, wild or controlled, ring, ray or RABCK counts.

I have asked D2L for a list of some titles that they know of which might work for the challenge re: subject matter. Here are some.

The Lovely Bones
South of Broad
Lolita
Like Water for Chocolate
The Redeemer
The Kite Runner
The Pact
A Thousand Splendid Suns
Mystic River
To Kill A Mockingbird
Memoirs of a Geisha
many thriller/mystery suspense books by various authors, including Elizabeth George, Harlan Coban

plus all the books for survivors, or for educating children how to stay safe.

I'm in!

I have a copy of John Grisham's "A Time to Kill" which opens with the brutal rape of a 10 year-old girl, which sets the stage for the story of retribution and justice that follows. I have set it aside to use for this challenge, and will keep my eyes open for other books as well.

Thanks for joining! I've added some links to custom labels in the store.

I've been preparing books for another challenge on Banned Books (9/30-10/7). There are so many books out there that are challenged or banned in schools because of 'sexual content' (The Tenth Circle, deals with date rape of a 14 year-old), or 'promotes premarital sex' (Speak, rape of a 12 year old), or 'inapropriate material, profanity' (Push, incest). I've muttered to myself that too many people think if we just don't talk about sex, violence, or abuse it will all go away.

By banning books to teens, we further try to make it go away, and negate their attempts to deal with what they experience. Sad, very sad. Both challenges needed, I'm making 2 stacks of books.

Great observations. I love reading and I love books, but the two of them, like life, often aren't easy. I tend to shy away from the more gritty books, but this is making me face them and use them as tools to help others.

There's no D2L in my country (Greece) but raising awareness is important. I'll see if I can find a similar local organization to direct people to.

Thanks for joining us. I'll ask the D2L folks if they know of something in Greece.

and people think there isn't a problem. Maybe old copies of Sports Illustrated should count. (Just kidding, although I am INFURIATED that people think Penn got hammered over the issue.)

Count me in on this one, as it's such an important issue.

..I'll have to see what I can come up with.

Is this for only wild/OBCZ releases?
