No way!

The *one* square I didn't want to land on! :-S I hope my teammate has some bright idea. A tough one to crack. Hmmm....
Profile Image

RE: No way!

Ah no, that's just sod's law! Still.. I'm sure you can think of things when you put your heads together - it could be the middle of anything....
Profile Image
I have some ideas and hope we can come up with a nice release!

Beware you all, Team Boot is going to steal your points! And now off to thinking some good ideas for pickpocketing your goodies, bwahahahaaa...

Chance cards

Just to explain, so that everyone knows:

Some of the chance cards give the opportunity to release 2 or even 3 books - the card will state that explicitaly as a 'double release' or 'triple release'. Usually these will be themed together - eg a high and low double release. And so you can get 2 points for releasing 2 books, as well as twice the opportunity for a catch etc.
I have a list of chance cards (which I update as I have more ideas or as suggestions come in, so if you have ideas PM me and I will add them!) with each 'card' being an item on a numbered list. I then use a random number generator (or, a collegue / housemate being asked to pick a number) to select the card for each time a team lands on a chance square.

My team-mate has saved us! Brilliant!

Actually, I think we were both correct.

It *was* Team Wolf that used Fforde for their turn 1 release, so any dodos you encounter are probably their responsibility.

On the other hand, I was thanking Team Iron for picking me as their Community Chest beneficiary for turn 2. :)

Just wanted to thank team Wolf for recommending Fforde in turn one. I am on holiday right now and downloaded The Eyre Affair and I LOVE it! I can't believe I have never read anything by Fforde, I now have the happy prospect of a lot of books to catch up on! Awesome!

yay more ffordian ffans :)

We decided to do a themed release for the Grand National at AinTREE
As we weren't able to do the release at the course decided to release a book in the bookies :) The link to the release is here http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11041715
Copper Beech was chosen both for the tree and for "Beeches (Bechers) Brook" at Aintree
I didn't dare take a photo inside - it was packed but when I returned later the book had gone and there was no sign of it in the wastepaper baskets - always good news!
Profile Image
Had to look up the Grand National, but very nice tie-in with trees..and the bookie is a cute touch. :)

Too bad about the horses. Sounds like Becher’s was one of the jumps involved. :(

For our second turn, Team Battleship is "in the middle".

http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/10556281

Our book was was released in the middle of the day (noonish: Hawaii is UTC -10) on the middle day of the month (Sunday 4/15) in the middle of the big bus stop on Middle Street. It's the middle book of the series (book 4 of 7), so it qualifies for my Middle-of-the-year number challenge release challenge.

My teammates (Elskaliam and MyChildsCloset) helped me pick just the right origami silver chair to leave with the book, and I added a mini origami Ballycumber as well.

Journal entry includes a photo; there are a couple more here (including prep work): http://www.flickr.com/---/monopoly/

Well, at least he found some friends, although they seemed a little cool towards him at first..

Here comes the release by team Boot. We got In Jail which means:
"You landed yourself in jail, but what for? You steal a point from another team by making a release themed to their team (either their team name, or something else about them)"

And we chose the team Wolf! (Sorry guys...)

Here's the link to the book: http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11030093
Includes pics :)

Stealing points from a wolf

Here in the Eastern Finland normal Gray Wolfes are quite popular, but there's also a rare species living in Finland called The Black Drop-Eared Wolf. It's hard to spot them in the woods as they are so fast and sly. Every 50 years, according to a legend, they have a howling contest but only if the Moon is in right position.

I live in a house built 56 years ago and found on the attic an old diary in which this legend was explained and also revealed the place where the wolves gather to their contest. It's not far from where I live.

And this year everything was exactly right and I went to the forest listening to it! I had to be very careful and silent.

Oh boy, the howling sounded creepy! There were 10 wolves sitting in circle and one of them howled at a time and a judge wolf evaluated them. I happened to see on the judge's list that my favourite was in a second place and I decided to act. I released a wolf themed book, decorated in wolf theme with a wolf themed bookmark so the judge wolf could see it. I saw he announced a little break and approached my book. The judge was pleased with it and he made adjustments to his list and stole a couple of points from the leading wolf so my favourite came first!

I couldn't get a picture of them all but I got a photo of the winner running towards me. I was so afraid he was going to eat me right there, but fortunately he spared me and I got home to write this to you all.

No worries :)

Love the story you build around it and it's a Wolf-book I didn't now yet, so it is already ordered. (OMG - this year I ordered already that many books, but when to read them...)

No, it's another bit of modern slang that always makes me want to throttle the person saying it (totes amaze = totally amazing, for people unable to cope with multiple syllables). It's not quite as ubiquitos (and by dint not quite as annoying) as OMG, but it's getting there.... ;)

Way to go, teammate!

They actually caught The Thimbles School release. Next time we will release in provincial Swabia ;).

It's a clever move - they get an extra point for catching another team's monopoly book (of course, so do the thimbles - their books got caught!)
Very impressed :)

That is what I was hoping for ;). This is probably quite unique because so many bookcrossers were in Dublin. Looking forward to the next round.

We had the perfect book, http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/2474358/ T.J.'s Secret Pitch, but where was a perfect secret sports ground? We returned to our book for more information: T.J.'s secret pitch was based on the underhand throw of Rip Sewell, famous in the 1940s as a pitcher. Aha! we cried! Is there still a Ballpark famous in the 1940s to release in? But no, just like the 'Eephus' pitch of Sewell, Ballparks from the 1940s have long gone to ground. Does nothing remain of those old days?
In Minnesota, Lexington Park was the home to the Minor leagues from 1897 to 1956, when it was razed for urban renewal. Was there anything left? According to Wikipedia, a plaque from the Park was affixed to a grocery store and then moved to a Bank building nearby. I was sent to scout the area. It was perfect! a fake homeplate had been sunk in the side walk, and covered with plexiglass. I confered with the rest of my team. We had made it! A Secret Sports Ground for a Secret Pitch!

But wait: Urban renewal awaits no man, and last week, a proper memorial was raised to the old Lexington Park. Between one week and the next, the cheesy plexiglass was gone, and a new shiny commeration was erected just for our release! T.J.'s faith in the importance of remembering the past was upheld!

click on Picture in JE3 shows quietorchid horrified about urban renewal in one week.

Dunedin in New Zealand places great emphasis on the education of the people in the city. The first high school for girls in the southern hemisphere was opened in Dunedin in 1870; Otago Girls High School. This historical building has seen many famous and not so famous girls being educated before going forward and making their mark on the world.

Xena: Warrior Princess is also well known for going forward and making her mark on the world. With her tight leather outfit, bosom buddy Gabrielle, and ability to fight her way out of many a mythological based situation she was a great edition to 1990's television. Played by New Zealand's own Lucy Lawless (presently appearing in Spartacus), she was a role model for many a child. (one of my friend's three year old's refused to answer to her real name and insisted on being called Xena).

So, to celebrate the education of girls and a kick-arse fighting spirit, team Wolf released

Xena: All I needed to Know I Learned from the Warrior Princess outside Otago Girls High School (est 1870)"

Powerstation release

http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/10084279/

The book has been released in the Electricity House, center of Helsinki, headquarters of the local electricity firm, with two secret floors under the ones accessible to visitors, where they have the powerstations for that area hidden ;)
Had to make do with the first floor, where earlier they had the customer service for the company, now a very nice coffee place.
The book has been released inside a "power station", a grey box like you have thousands around Helsinki.
And the book is "Atomised", so dangerous for your health, that's why it had to released inside a protective cover ;)

I doubt it will be clear enough for the "average finder" that the bookcrossing label means a safe pick up of the book. I hope that the book is not regarded as a dangerous package with a bomb in it!

Ok, we did it !!!
It was really difficult because of the rain, but I finally released the book this afternoon - under the rain... but in a bag.

Our theme was "New Frontier". We chose to release our book near a travel agency named "Nouvelles Frontières" that is "New Frontiers".
The name of the agency, the travel, all of this is in our theme.
And we chose a bilingual book : Lao Tzeu, "le Tao te King", a french-chinese book. Because China is a foreign country, really far away, and you have to travel a lot of frontiers (some of them are almost new) to get there.

Here is the journal entry with some pictures :

Just in time !

And congratulations to team Boot who must have been so scared by the wolves... ;o)

Team Train?

It's an hour and a quarter past the deadline and I haven't heard from team train - maybe they are sitting this turn out? anyway, I will give them until I get home from work before I announce bonus points and next turn :)

FYI if teams let me know about their releases late, so long as the release itself was within the two weeks, I still give points for it - but once I have announced bonus points any later entries are ineligible for those (excepting exceptional circumstances, like site breakdown, meaning that releases cannot be reported on time)
Profile Image
Bonus Points go to...
- Team Battleship for the most middles, and excellent origami skills
- Team Boot for storytelling good enough to make wolves howl

My team has been in contact with each other & we agreed that we would take turns for each of the rounds. I did my part for the first round, so I feel really let down by a particular team member because they did not pull their weight, even when we specifically emailed her to say it was her turn.

It must be disappointing but don't worry about it as it was only one turn and one point, and this early in the game it doesn't make much difference.

Focus on week three and see what creative things can be thought up for "East".

ah, that sucks :( what kiwi said is right though, if I were you 'Id just jump straight back on there :)

It's a shame that you felt your teammate let you down. It understand if you agree to take turns to do releases it's disappointing if other people don't do their bit.
However, if you don't hear anything from your teammates, maybe you could have done a release yourself after all. That's probably what I would have done. I can't tell why that person didn't do a release, but maybe it was just a misunderstanding.
