Having never 'done' a reading challenge (both in participation nor creation ways) I have decided to set myself a challenge for next year.

Having seen this challenge kicking around, I have decided to give it a go myself.

Starting at midnight of January 1st 2011, and finishing at 11:59pm on December 31st 2011, I shall be challenging myself to the 6 books, 6 countries, 6 continents - Reading Challenge.

The challenge consists of:

You have to read 6 books which are set in OR are written by an author from 6 different countries in each of the 6 continents within the 12 month period of the 1st day of 2001 and the last.

The 6 continents are:
AFRICA
ASIA (INCL. MIDDLE EAST & S.E. ASIA)
OCEANIA
EUROPE
NORTH AMERICA (INCL. CENTRAL AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN)
SOUTH AMERICA

So...for example:
ASIA (INCL. MIDDLE EAST & S.E. ASIA)
Book 1.Japan, Book 2.Saudi Arabia, Book 3.China, Book 4.India, Book 5.Afghanistan

*NB You cannot count books of the same country twice

It'd be nice to have others join me in this challenge, however (my game = my rules!), there can be no book / author / title mentioned in the thread until it has actually been read by you for this challenge. This will give people some help if they are struggling for ideas, but only once another participant has read the book (otherwise I fear there will be countless title / author ideas thrown around in the next month and a half prior to the challenge starting, which will consume the thread). This can be done by 'ticking' your countries off, and keeping everyone up to date with your progress on the challenge.

Another 'rule' is that books CANNOT be offered up to nor asked of other participants in the thread, however they CAN be sent as surprise RABCKs should the owner of the book so wish.

And last but not least....THIS IS NOT A RACE, NOR A COMPETITION !!!

So who's with me??!!
Profile Image
I have seen other BCers mention this on their pages and thought it might be fun to try. I will look through my TBRs right now to set aside some to start the new year off right.
Profile Image

me please

I've done - and failed this challenge before, will be good to hive it another go
Profile Image

I'm in

I'm in on this. It will be a good excuse to read some world fiction. Is non-fiction included in the challenge? Here's a link to a list of countries in each continent which might be helpful:

RE: I'm in

The link has changed somehow to: http://www.worldatlas.com / cntycont.htm
Profile Image
Sounds like a great way to diversify my reading choices!
Profile Image

Also...

A good site to use to disover where an author is from is http://www.fantasticfiction.com
9/10 it states the authors birth place, and / or shows a flag
Great site, I use it alot
Profile Image

Okay, I'm in!

So if I read a book by a German author which is set in France I can either count it for Germany or for France (if I've already got a book for Germany for example), right?
Profile Image
That's right. A book can only be counted the once

For example, the book The Kite Runner was set in Kabul, but was written by Khaled Hosseini who was born in America.

Personally I am going to attempt the challenge going by author's birth places, and see how I go
Profile Image
I tried two years ago, and didn't quite make it, so have continued tracking my countries this year too. Europe and Asia are easy, but the others are much more difficult. I found South America was the most difficult to find books for, and even North America was awkward, when you can only count the USA once. I'm glad you're taking up the organisation this year, as it's much more motivating when you can see what other people are reading.
Profile Image
You can find the old thread under book talk "6 books, 6 countries, 6 continents" if you need suggestions.

Some of us did maps on our profiles to show which countries we'd done.

Good luck to all participants. :)
Profile Image
I'm up for a reading challenge next year, this might be it!

Just a question/suggestion. Maybe instead of counting the U.S as one country, we could do states instead?
Profile Image
Nope...thats cheating!
Profile Image
..Only six books? This will give me motivation to read some of the World Fiction languishing on Mt. TBR. I'm in!
Profile Image
..Only six books?

It will be 6 books from 6 differnet countires, within the 6 differnt continents = 36 books
Profile Image
It was just a suggestion. Since a lot of american states are as big or in most cases bigger as a lot of african or european countries.
Profile Image
Ok - I'm a list-a-holic and a book addict.

So....here is a "subject to change" list on google docs: http://tinyurl.com/3wuv4o6
of what I MAY read in 2011 for this challenge. What I PLAN to read Jan-March will be posted in the 15th SIY challenge. And if you're a mooch for books, KEEP YOUR WISHLIST UP TO DATE. I plan to continuing rabck'g (although not EVERY week) through 2011, so these books move on out!

Other links:
World Atlas: http://www.worldatlas.com/cntycont.htm - so you can see what continent your country is in
Authors: www.fantasticfiction.com. Only going to help you out for a fiction author.
Here's the 2008 thread: http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/376918/
And for marsala - hyphen8 did states in 2009. I'm still slogging through my last three! Here's that link: http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/379938
And for making the maps that can go on your profile:

This should be fun! An excuse to read some recommended ones I've been hoarding!
Profile Image
Found some good folks from interesting places in the list of Nobel winners, but some of them are primarily poets... Will poetry collections count?
Profile Image
That's up to you. I spoke to someone the other week who did all of their books as non fiction whilst their friend did all of theirs as fiction.
You might want to do all of yours as poets...?
However, I'm not setting this as a 'rule'. Of course you can mix it up if you wish. Everyone I;m sure will set their own challenge and just use the 666 as their framework :)
Profile Image
I'll probably be mixing up fiction, non-fiction and poetry especially for some of the more difficult places.
Profile Image
I've been looking for a new reading challenge for 2011 so I think I might give this one a go. Did I understand correctly that you're not meant to repeat books that others have read in this challenge? If so, where do you find out what others have read - am new to the site, so haven't explored everything that's on here yet.
Profile Image

No no no....you can read the same books as others, all I ask is that you don't mention a book here until you have finished reading it.

Oh and welcome to bookcrossing...I see you joined yesterday and that this was your 1st forum post :)

Thanks! And yes, you're right it was my first post! I reckon the Oceania part of this challenge is going to be the most difficult.... Can you include the Antarctic??
Profile Image
On Satuday it will be exactly 3 weeks until this challenge begins.
I just wanted to check that you are all still in!?
Profile Image
I am! I'm excited! I'm glad I've been saving my PaperbackSwap credits because I've been able to collect some African and Oceanian literature, neither of which were at all represented on my shelves.
Profile Image
Have gone through Mt. TBR and found some promising selections. I have at least one book for each of the 6 continents and I think I may have all 6 selected for Asia and at least 4 for Europe. I even have 2 for Oceania (the easiest 2 countries: Australia and New Zealand).
Profile Image
I'm in. Need to cut down my Mount TBR (as it's ever possible thanks to BC and book stores).
Profile Image
Oceania is NOT a continent. :)
Profile Image
Oceania is NOT a continent

True, but tomatoes are fruit.....
But for this challenge, my chosen 6 'continents' are AFRICA, ASIA (INCL. MIDDLE EAST & S.E. ASIA), OCEANIA, EUROPE, NORTH AMERICA (INCL. CENTRAL AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN), SOUTH AMERICA

For guidleines of these continents and their countries please see: http://www.worldatlas.com/cntycont.htm

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

How many Continents are there in the world?
5 continents
We have been taught in school (way back in the 60's in Europe) that there are five continents, Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe, for instance symbolised in the five rings of the Olympic Games.

6 continents
However, there is no standard definition for the number of continents. In Europe, many students are taught about six continents, where North and South America is combined to form a single America.
These six continents are Africa, America, Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceania, and Europe.

7 continents
By most standards, there are a maximum of seven continents - Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America, and South America. Many geographers and scientists now refer to six continents, where Europe and Asia are combined (because they're one solid landmass).
These six continents are then Africa, Antarctica, Australia/Oceania, Eurasia, North America, and South America.

Oceania a continent?
Actually, by the definition of a continent as a large continuous area of land, the Pacific Islands of Oceania aren't a continent, but one could say they belong to a continent, e.g. Oceania is sometimes associated with the continent of Australia.

Just out of curiousity, does the book "Yeats is Dead!" (a mystery written by 15 Irish writers) count? Is it possible to tick off Ireland with this book?

Hmm....please refer to my original post for this thread:
"It'd be nice to have others join me in this challenge, however (my game = my rules!), there can be no book / author / title mentioned in the thread until it has actually been read by you for this challenge."

Even though it seems I broke this rule myself!
Profile Image
V. Sorry - I didn't think it would be a prob as the Challenge hadn't started yet, and I was just saying it as a resource a la an atlas.
Doesn't it figure that the first book I'm reading is going to get my US book done and dusted? Glad to get some of the World Lit on Mt. TBR going finally...
Profile Image
Please use this thread to keep us up to date with your progress throughout the year

I'd love to try this. Don't think I'll be able to come close to the numbers, but it will certainly diversify my reading material!

Greenland? I don't see it listed on the countries by continent list

how about Scotland - is that considered part of the UK (therefore counts as UK?)

Nancy
Profile Image
Greenland

It belongs to North America (even though it belongs to Denmark) because, like Russia and Turkey, it is a country that goes across two continents.

As for Scotland, it is up to you, you can include it as UK, or you can separate the British Isles into England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales...personally I'd class a Scottish author as being counted as the UK for this challenge, but its ultimately up to your own interpretation.

Thank you! I couldn't figure out why it was on the MAP for North America - but that's actually better.

Europe - oodles of books, and this book really is set in 3 countries: England, Scotland AND the Netherlands - so I think I go with the AUTHOR's country :-)

A little rearranging of the 666 spreadsheet to do, but that was expected as some settings can't really be ascertained until you read the book.

I think Oceania will be the hardest to fulfill.

Will probably release this one in a bit when it fits with a release challenge, but I want to strongly recommend for North America (The Dominican Republic) The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.

Thanks to this challenge I discovered that Philippa Gregory was actually born in Kenya. But as she's English and the book is firmly set in England I thought it was best to count the book for the UK.

I have not been onto the challenges thread for a while and just saw this. What a wonderful challenge. I am sure that I will not get to all the countries, but it is a good way to ensure that I am reading more widely.

So I will be taking part. Thanks for starting this, it looks fun.
Profile Image
As virtually any book I read (apart from Sci Fi or fantasy) can be counted towards the challenge. It's only later in the year that my biased reading habits become an issue, as I seem to mainly read books set in the UK, Ireland, America or New Zealand...

Apologies Kiwi for ignoring this comment earlier, with my singing-dancing laptop I didn't see it, said laptop is now sick and I'm reduced to using my "what is a browser" and "I didn't know broadband had been invented" old laptop, but for some odd reason I spotted your message on that one.
I was having problems with the edit function at the time but that now seems to be working ok. Yippee! :)
