Once again I want to thanks those who made last years challenge so successful and due to request we will continue the challenge.

In honor of Banned and Challenged Books I would like to offer a release challenge.

Starting 9/26/09 thru 10/2/10 (banned book week for next year is September 25–October 2, 2010), how many banned books can you release?

Books may be dual released and books can be released any time throughout the time period mentioned above. Any release counts.

Please post releases and links to this thread.

A banned book will be awarded to the person with the most banned books released during this time frame.

Here are some links to websites about Banned and Challenged Books: http://www.ala.org/---/bannedbooksweek.htm and http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/---/banned-books.html and http://www.oclc.org/---/banned.htm

Hi,

I am from Germany and I've got some questions:

I don't quite understand this challenge. Where have these books been banned, in which country, and why? Is there a law?

Where do you get these books if they are banned? Isn't this illegal then?

I confess, I am a bit confused. Sorry if my questions seem stupid, but banned books don't exist in my country.

...and most of those are readily available now, at least in most places.

Here's a link to the American Library Association page about banned/challenged books:

http://www.ala.org/---/index.cfm

That site has lists of frequently-challenged books as well, usually with a brief mention of the reason. Quite a few of the challenges have to do with the books available to children in school libraries; a challenge might be a request to have a book removed from the library entirely or just limited to special shelves or parental-permission-only, that kind of thing.

The list of challenged classics might be of interest too ( http://www.ala.org/---/index.cfm ); some of those actually were banned from being published or imported, including Joyce's Ulysses.

Edited to add: I think this may be the correct link to the OCLC list:

This charming little book is about a young girl-hamster who's fretting that her Uncle Bobby's wedding with his boyfriend will cause him to spend less time with her; not to worry, though! [Wild release.]

Update: Got a catch and a new member already - hooray!

In Country, by Bobbie Ann Mason. There was a failed attempt to ban it in an Indiana public school district, for language and sexual references. It is about a 17-year-old girl who wonders about her father, who was killed in Vietnam.

It is also part of the Movie Books release challenge.

Kafka's The Trial ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8102034/ ), a graphic-novel adaptation (hope that counts - I don't know if the graphic-novel edition has been challenged, though the original novel certainly was). It's in multiple release challenges.
Profile Image
#6. Fahrenheit 451 ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8289347/ ) - also in the Movie Books release challenge. [Note: this is a graphic-novel adaptation of the original, approved by Bradbury - I don't know if this adaptation's ever been challenged, though the original certainly has. Let me know if this doesn't qualify!]

Earlier this year I compiled the three ALA lists into one searchable format and posted it on google docs.

These are the top 100 challenged books for each "list", usually challenged based on content for schools.

Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury. There's something "meta" about a banned book about book banning. Anyway, it's also a "movie book," and it has a picture of a book on the cover (Never Judge a Book by Its Cover, week 39).

I am glad we are doing this again next year. I already have a book picked out to release soon.
