Traveling but still open: Stephen King's The Stand (graphic novel)

US-only bookray for the graphic novel version of Stephen King's post-apocalyptic novel The Stand in 6 parts; this was also a TV miniseries.

A deadly flu-like disease escapes from a secret government facility and quickly wipes out over 99% of the population. The survivors find themselves drawn to one of two leaders: the Dark Man, sometimes known as Randall Flagg, and the centenarian Mother Abigail. The two have radically different philosophies, and conflict is inevitable.

---

I'm offering this as a US bookray. The volumes are nice glossy pages and quite heavy: all together they weigh over 4#, so they're best sent by media mail. Since it *is* six volumes, I figure 2 months per person is a reasonable time frame.

(hardcover) Volume 1: Captain Trips - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11964039
Volume 2: American Nightmares - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11965816
Volume 3: Soul Survivors - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/12033645
Volume 4: Hardcases - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/12061937
Volume 5: No Man's Land - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/12033651
Volume 6: The Night Has Come - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/12061942

NOTE: I'm not opposed to this going out of the country, but someone would have to be willing to send it internationally, and it's so heavy..

I got Vol 1 last year from a friend, and have been looking to read the others ever since.

Especially when The Stand is one of my favorites? I would love to join! I'm in NY.

Also, should there be a rule you must mail with delivery confirmation with media mail? Since it is six books? Maybe it will be less likely to be lost if there is tracking on it. But I'm not even sure if you can have delivery confirmation on media mail? Just an idea!

thanks so much for offering this!

Absolutely. The Post Office is more than pleased to add 90 cents to the total. And I always use it.
Profile Image
oh okay, I'll definitely use delivery confirmation if I'm taking part in this... I just don't think I've ever used it with media mail before, just with other things I've mailed.

Well, having to use DC would be hyphen8's call. I just was saying I always use it. This is a great series though, at least Vol 1, which I have.

I'll put up rules & stuff eventually - at this point I'm just trolling for readers. But DC is definitely a good plan for this.

EDIT: trolling as in fishing. Not implying anything about readers (or even non-readers) of this thread. ;)

Well, that's good. Because if you are waiting for Randall Flagg to show up, I'm outta here.

No, thanks! I'm not even that crazy about Las Vegas. :p

I happened on a used copy of volume 1 and got sucked in: gorgeous, full-color artwork, etc.. If you like the book, you should definitely read the graphic novels. You will see the influence of the TV miniseries as well (but then, I liked that, too).

Enough to get started, but I'll keep it open...

I hope more people join! I forgot to mention I can only mail in the US just in case you decide to let people join outside the US. But if not, I don't mind being last on the list. thanks again!

No worries, I think this one pretty heavy for mailing out of the country. Unless someone is traveling and willing to hand-deliver, it will probably stay within the US.

..at a significantly slower pace than Captain Trips!

So far, the mailing order is:

I can't believe only two people have signed up so far but I'm really looking forward to this!
Profile Image

Oh boy!

I'm looking forward to some seriously atmospheric reading.

I saw this thread on Friday and have been thinking whether to sign up. I read manga, but I have never tried graphic novel. I do like Stephen King and watched TV mini-series, but I've never read it. After thinking it over this weekend, I decided to sign up. It'll be my very first graphic novel to read! And it's King! I hope there will be more people sign up:)
Profile Image
Yay, another person! This is a well-drawn, full-color set so it's a very visual experience. I hope you will enjoy it.
Profile Image
Any other US readers?
Profile Image
(gibbering in excitement) have already read the first one before I even announced the arrival in the forums. Boy is this good.

Thanks hyphen8!
Profile Image
so imuzak12 will be next.

I tried to pace myself when reading these; part of me wanted to gobble them up, but I tend to find reading graphic novels more tiring than regular books (I think it's because they're so visual), and these are fairly intense. On the other hand, as the story builds, it's hard not to keep going..

Eek! The Stand is here! Makes all those "get your flu shots now" signs around town seem sinister somehow {wry grin}...

Yeah, perhaps Volume 1 should not be read while one has a cold, sniffles, etc. :p
Profile Image
Hey it often takes a few weeks from exposure.. koff, koff, achooo!
Profile Image
Anyone else interested?
Profile Image
If it isn't too late, I would love to read this one!
