Steampunk Bookbox (US Only)[Back home]

I would like to start a steampunk bookbox. For those not familiar with the term steampunk, scroll down, I wrote a little description. This would be great way to try this increasingly popular sub-genre.

I will need at least three participants to join the box.

To join, just post and I'll add your name to the list. I hope to ship the box out early January. I only have 8 or so books (mostly unregistered) at the moment and want to get a few more and be able to write proper reviews for them.

Sorry overseas Bookcrossers, this one's US only to keep shipping down. If it is a success however, I might consider doing an international one for round two.

Bookbox rules:
*Please try to keep the bookbox limited to steampunk stories. This can be a fairly wide ranging term, but I would like to avoid a lot of witchpunk or non-Victorian Era sci-fi.
*When you get the box please post here so we can track its progress.
*Journal all books you take out of the box and make sure you put at least the same number back in.
*Make sure the books you add have the BCID in them. It seems obvious, but I have had times when folks forgot and I had to try and track them down.
*Books do not have to be the first in a series, but before adding take into consideration how they will read as a stand-alone. If the future reader is going to be completely lost, particularly if the series isn't easily found, please consider finding it a home another way.
*Please pass the box on within 2 weeks. If something comes up and you are going to have to hold onto the box a little longer, let me know so we don't have to worry.
*If you have an extra buck or two, consider buying Delivery Confirmation or a tracking number. It's handy for the person you are sending it to, as well as the bookbox organizer.

*What is Steampunk?*

Steampunk is genre involving a blend of the Victorian Era with anachronistic technology. Often it posits a world with fairly modern technology that is powered by steam rather than electricity. (Hence the steam part of steampunk.) The punk element is generally shown by characters who defy Victorian social norms or are anti-heros.

For the purposes of this bookbox, steampunk is anything set in or around 1837 to 1901 (Queen Victoria's lifetime) with purposeful historically inaccurate technology.

*What about Witchpunk?*

If steampunk is sci-fi in the Victorian Era, witchpunk is fantasy in the Victorian Era. This can range from a story with supernatural beings to swords-and-sorcery tales. Sometimes it can be hard to tell which a story is; for example Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series involves vampires and werewolves, but it is all presented as entirely scientific (the concept of magic is scoffed at) and there is a lot of anachronistic tech. I would call it steampunk, but it definitely wanders towards witchpunk at points.

You are right, I need an intro to Steampunk, and this is a darn good way to get it. Good idea.

Bump!

Anyone else interested?

Anyone else want to join? I am hoping to get the last few books registered on the upcoming Thursday and Friday, which means I'll be able to ship them out soon.
Profile Image

Yaaaay!

I would definitely be interested, but I haven't got any steampunk books at present. Can you put me at the end of the list so I can get some together?
Profile Image
I'm in Oregon and I have lots of Steampunk books, but most of them I haven't had time to read. How soon before this box is ready to roll? I need to get busy and finish some of them.
Profile Image
I was hoping to get the box out in the middle of December, but at this point late December/early January might be more likely. NaNoWriMo sucked up all my free time in November (and the story isn't even finished), so I haven't really had a chance to prepare for this box.
Profile Image
I was hesitating about signing up because most of the steampunk books I had went out in the last box, and I've already released most of the ones I took! But I think I can lay my hands on a few more - not that I need an excuse to go roaming the bookstores...
Profile Image
but I know that I don't have anything that qualifies for it, nor not sure where I'd even begin to look, author-wise. Would love to sign up, but won't...still want to follow the bookbox so when you get a link (the box tracking book), please consider posting it here. Thanks!

If you'd like to see examples of steampunk literature, the ever-helpful Wikipedia has a "List of steampunk works" page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/---/List_of_steampunk_works

It's not a complete list by any means, but it should give you some idea - and you may even find you have a suitable book or two on hand already {wry grin}. And the TV Tropes site's steampunk page ( http://tvtropes.org/---/SteamPunk ) also has lots of titles, and is a bit more amusing to read.

Bless you GoryDetails. I was panicking myself as I signed up to get an intro to Steampunk. I will check out some used bookstores with more confidence now.

And it's off!

The box was send out to quietorchid today. If you want a preview of what you might find when it gets to you, there is a list below this message. If you like surprises, don't read down to the end.

As a bit of a bonus, I added a couple of graphic novels that are light on the steampunk (though it is there), but that I thought might be entertaining:

Manga Shakespeare: Twelfth Night ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/9903187/ ), with steampunk elements in the artwork

Anima ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/10323025/ ), a yaoi manga with clockwork androids - and with buckles, lots of buckles...

I know this box has already traveled around quite a bit, but I'd love to join in if I still can!
Profile Image
Definitely! I will add you to the end so if you don't have any steampunk on hand (I didn't see any I recognized on your bookshelf), it will give you a little time to hit a few book stores.
Profile Image
Just came in today's mail. Will get a look through it shortly.

Sorry guys! Have been dealing with a family emergency. I finally picked and am just waiting for the last 4 books to get here that I ordered. I ordered them right before I learned the box was coming my way. Should be here and ready to mail back out by Monday, I hope.

I will post what I took and put in here this afternoon.

So far I have chosen:
Leviathan
Soulless
Changeless
Steampunk II

I have put in:
Leviathan (bcid ***-10410393) *gonna send my copy to travel out while I send the box copy on from here.
Behemoth (bcid ***-10410395)
Steampunk II (bcid 10432201)
Profile Image
forgot to add:
The Difference Engine (bcid 845-10432205)

There are a couple more I'm interested in. If the ones I ordered aren't here by Friday, I will be passing the box on. Thanks for sharing your books.
Profile Image
Just a note on the BCIDs, though: you shouldn't post the full BCIDs that way, as it would allow anyone to journal the books even though they'd never been near them. [In the past we've actually had spammers target journal entries via publically posted BCIDs!] You can edit your posts if you like; to post a link to the book, just copy its URL and paste it into your forum post, and the site will make it clickable automatically. Or just list the titles; that's fine too!

I had picked two more from the box: Hot & Sweaty/Carnal Machines.

In return, I put in: Anno Dracula/Steamed.

Thanks again for sharing the box.

I look forward to going through it and checking out the steampunk selection!

Bookbox is traveling once again. Here's the DC#: 9102150134711263499071

I'm so sorry I haven't updated this sooner, but my internet has been down. I received the box about a week ago, and I'll probably need another week to get it sent on its way again.
Profile Image
if you decide to post a round II I would definitely be interested in participating.
Profile Image
Alright, many apologies for the delay; but this has now been sent back to you, emmejo.
Profile Image
Thank you to everyone for participating and for adding some great books! I have quite a stack to read.

Since this box went well, I am considering doing a second round, possibly a smaller, international box which might increase the number of people interested. If I decide to run another, I'll PM everyone who participated (and those who thought it sounded fun) and let them know.
