"How does a Bookbox work?" (From the Bookcrossing.com FAQs)
Bookbox - Person #1 gathers together a bunch of books, This can be as few as 8 or 10, or as many as 30 or 40 paperbacks. The books can be themed (sci-fi, chick-lit, romance, children's, etc) or just random books. After posting a message on the Bookring/Ray forum, s/he gathers a list of interested participants. Box is mailed to Person #2, who takes out a couple of books and puts the same amount back in, then mails it to Person #3. Eventually, the box will make it back to Person #1, who has a lot of new books to read!

Hi! I'd love to join this book box of manga and graphic novels. I'm a fan of free for all! But whatever makes it easy. Thanks for the PM! Have a great day. :>)
Profile Image
I should note that I've often discovered new manga series via a late-series volume, and I don't mind that at all; it can be a good way to find out a bit about a series without having to start at the beginning, and if I decide I do like it then it's not that much of a headache to hunt up earlier volumes. [I do think that if you settle on an anything-goes option, it would still be polite to keep sequential volumes together - that is, I wouldn't cherry-pick volume 5 from a 1-7 set and mail the others on.]

It *might* be worthwhile setting an upper limit in volumes from the same series; with the longer series it'd be way too easy to load the box with nothing but that, and if someone wants to do that it might be better to set up a special box (or spiral). I'm thinking of doing that with the Kurosagi Corpse Delivery books, as it happens, though I do have an extra copy of volume 7 that I could save for this box, by way of giving people a taste... [That series is more episodic than most, so it wouldn't suffer much from being read out of order, fwiw.]

I've been getting into more and more manga lately so I was hoping for something like this. [Some of mine are yaoi, and others are mature-audience books for various reasons; if you want to put any limits on content or age-limit, please let us know!]
Profile Image

I'm in!!!

It has been ages since the last BC manga bookbox. As a result I have a bunch of mangas sitting in my house, and, lacking any urgency, remains TBR.

And I prefer the Free-for-all format too.

Why? A few years ago I picked up a few volumes of a manga called Firefighter! (Daigo of Fire Company M) It was not the beginning, but as the story goes as sort of episodes (don't know how to explain, but basically several chapters will tell a somewhat complete short story) it was easy for me to jump in and I totally love it. I did later find earlier volumes, but as those were drawn at earlier days, the artwork and storytelling skill are actually not as mature as later volumes. That happen a lot with Japanese mangas, as a series can take years, if not decades, to complete.

In the past, I've seen later volumes added to bookboxes. For me, I will try to include more sypnosis in the journal, to provide background information so the next reader can enjoy it better.

For books with adult content, you can put it in a wrapper with a warning label on front, so people won't get a nasty surprise.

Hooray!

Since everyone seems open to a Free-for-All format, let's go with that :D I'm thinking of starting the box with about twenty books, with a good variety of genres and titles. If anyone has a genre preference, speak up! :)

Yaoi and mature-age comics are fine with me; I don't read them too many of them myself but if there are any in the box when I get it back I'll certainly give them a shot and find them a happy home.

Profile Image

Interested!

I'm definitely interested, but am wondering at the cost of sending such a box (this would be my first so I'm not sure). I'm also possibly moving in the next month, but am not certain yet, so I'd just have to watch out for that.

I agree with the others about later volumes. It's fine as long as it doesn't get to be too much. :)

In any case, this is such an awesome idea! A while ago, I gathered up manga I didn't want anymore. I'm excited at the idea of exchanging them with others!

I'm totally fine with yaoi/mature manga, I have a couple in my pile (also, do yaoi novels count?). I also have some shounen and shoujo!

:) As a general rule, your standard manga volume weighs roughly 8 oz. Twenty volumes would be about 10 lbs for shipping (11 if you account a little extra weight for packaging and padding), which when shipped Media Mail costs about $6-$8. It's not too bad - less than the cost of buying a new book of manga at the store!
Profile Image
Thanks for answering! I'd like to join, but if needed, could I ask to have my name moved to lower down the list?
Profile Image
Sure! I can pop you towards the end, no problem!
Profile Image
Thank you! =)
Profile Image

I'll join!

Thank you for the PM! I have been toying with the idea of starting one myself, but I was waiting to hoard a bigger pile I felt like giving away. :-) This saves me the trouble (particularly with NaNoWriMo going on.)

Me and my sister HGH95 would love join. You can ship it to one address and we'll both have a look.

Thank you very much!
Profile Image
Please add me, I have lots of graphic novels I'd love to share! Hurrah! :)

Back in the day, when I read faster and had more money, I used to love the graphic novel bookrelays. Ahhhh, those were the days!

Thanks for starting this! <3 I'm in the UK and can post within Europe by surface mail.

ETA: DAMN! I'm so sorry, I didn't read the title all the way to the end in my excitement... US only. :( Perhaps I will start one of my own? But if anyone's willing to post overseas, let me know! And since I'm being awkward, I'm willing to mail to the US too.
Profile Image
Sorry Lotti
Next year, if this box goes well, I might do a smaller one internationally. But right now, my finances can't get the box overseas!
Profile Image

Hello

I'd like to join if it's at all possible.

Heh! There is a certain anticipation with bookboxes - but try not to get too impatient; even if the box moves as quickly as possible, with minimum book-selection time by each participant, it could still take a week or two for each mail-hop. When I know there's a themed bookbox on the way, I try to concentrate on acquiring, reading, and reviewing books that fit the theme, so that when the box does arrive I'll have plenty of suitable books on hand and can make my own selections and replacements very quickly. [This also makes a nice excuse to go buy more suitable books, as if I needed an excuse {wry grin}.]

RE: RE: -

Thanks for the advice! I've already read the stack I have and can't afford to buy any, but I do have some manga on the way from PaperBackSwap to read and my friend may be sending me some as well (crossing my fingers), so I have that to look forward to! And I have plenty of books on the TBR pile, of course. XD

Thanks for sending it! Wow - there are so many titles!

Oh yes, should we PM our addresses to you (the organizer) or to the person above us on the list?

Oh yes, should we PM our addresses to you (the organizer) or to the person above us on the list?

It's common to just wait until you are contacted by the person ahead of you, who will ask you for your address as soon as they've received the box. That way the address should be current, and allows for changes in the mailing order between now and when the book's due to get to you. [This also means that if your situation has changed such that you do not have the time or money to deal with a bookbox, you can ask to be skipped, so you won't wind up either stalling the box or having to deal with an expense that you can no longer handle easily.]

K00kaburra, I am in Sunnyvale, so if it would be fine for me to get the box right near the end and I can get it to you since I see you are local. :)

I have started a cataloguing system with Delicious Library and I think I have entered in most of my manga/graphic novels on there and currently have 147. :)

added you :) Always glad to know there's another 'Crosser in the South Bay!

Got the box!

Yay! Lots of awesome books. I'll have to go through and decide what I want, it might take a couple days.
Profile Image
Oh good! I'm excited, even though it will probably be a couple of months before the box comes my way. I've already started gathering graphic novels for when it does. Hooray!

Also, I have sort of an odd question. For books with "adult" or "mature" content, graphic depictions of sex are obviously something to warn folks about on a wrapper or bag the book would go in. However, should we include books with graphic violence or descriptions of such in a similar warning too? Or a warning about possibly distressing situations, like discussion or depiction of suicide?

For example, one of the books I'm considering including is about a woman who works in a mental hospital. It contains lots of fairly depressing discussion on mental illness, death, poverty, suicide, and spirituality, some of which I could easily see being potentially being really upsetting to someone. However, it's also a graphic novel that pretty much saved my life when I was in high school, so I'm hesitant to basically label it as something to shy away from just because it deals with topics that can be uncomfortable to contemplate. What do you guys think? Should I include a warning for such material too? I'm just not sure on the etiquette for something of that nature.

Sorry for the lengthy post(s) and questions, I just want to make sure I don't mess things up. Eep.
Profile Image
Most graphic novels I've seen have a warning printed on the cover. Many have a rating, similar to movies and TV, and many have a brief explanation of why. It may say "violence", "drug use" or "full body nudity."

Here are a couple major publishers explanation of the ratings.
http://www.viz.com/ratings/
http://www.tokyopop.com/---/879

I would say put a note on the book if it doesn't already have a warning printed on it, but if it does have a rating that takes the emotional harshness of the book into account you shouldn't need to do anything.

I would follow this same etiquette for other issues, such as nudity. I have one book that was from a small translation company that went out of business not too long after, and I don't think it has a rating on it. It has some partial nudity and violence in it, so I should warn folks who don't want to just flip through and see that. One the other hand I have a couple volumes from a shonen-ai series that has a Mature/18+/Parental Advisory rating clearly marked all over it that I personally didn't find very explicit. Plenty of talk about sex and sex jokes, but it's about teenage guys, what did you expect? It doesn't have any sex scenes as far as I recall and I wouldn't have a problem with most teens, even the younger ones, reading it as long as they were comfortable with a lot of sex jokes.

All this is just my personal opinion about what I would do, so if K00kaburra has different guidelines I'm happy to follow those instead.
Profile Image
Sounds fine to me ;-p

I didn't bother to label any of the books I started the box with for violence or nudity, although perhaps I should have done. I think (I hope?) that most people who sign up for the bookbox have some idea of what to expect in terms of graphic content. As emmejo says, many of the major graphic novel publishers now put ratings on the cover to help warn readers about problematic content. If you guys want to add post-it warnings to books with no rating, go for it, but I don't think wrapping them or putting them in a bag will be necessary since part of the fun of a bookbox is that you can flip through the book to see what you think of it.

Box is here!

It was really bursting at the seams, though I don' think any book came out. But when I cut the top with a cutter, the box simply spilled open and the out poured the goodies!!

Wow what an amazing selection of titles!! I want them all. LOL. I soon realized that the books I have read and set aside aren't enough to replace what I want. Fortunately these are mangas so I should be able to speed read more to put in.
Profile Image
Ha ha! It sounds like a pinata!

That's what I thought too. XD I had to read it aloud to my mom so she could laugh with me.

I also put the books in a sturdier box.

Thanks for letting me participate, I enjoyed it and will definitely be participating in book boxes again in the future!

The most important thing I took away from this experience is...that I really need to read a lot more manga. XD I've read a bunch of the series that were in there but never continued them (like Ranma 1/2). I really enjoyed reading the first volumes of them again.

Hope everyone else has fun! ^_^

Just got the bookbox in the mail--so exciting! This was quite a neat selection. :-) Took some out, put some in, ready to get it moving along to the next person.
Profile Image
Hi!

You are next in line to get the bookbox, but it seems as if you have disabled PMs. Please PM me with your name and address, so I can pass it along... thank you! :-)
Profile Image
Hello, I've PMed you.
Profile Image
Is the box in transit now?
Profile Image
I don't know, I sent fireyfairy my address some time ago but haven't gotten a reply back.
Profile Image
Hopefully we'll soon hear from her and figure out whether the box is en route to you or not :)
Profile Image
I went ahead and sent her my address again just in case the first message got eaten somewhere along the way. It's been long enough that I'm starting to wonder if every thing's okay, I sure hope nothing's happened to her. Hopefully I'll hear from her soon though, if I get the box in the mail or hear from her I'll post it here.
Profile Image
I hope the box re-surfaces, but I admit I'm a bit concerned - for one thing, I see very few graphic novels on that bookshelf at all, and none that appear to have been recently journaled from this bookbox or released to it, even though her forum post said she had taken/added books. [I see there's an ISO thread for her - I hope that turns up something!]
Profile Image
If all else fails I can start a new box and send the graphic novels I've registered to the next person on the list. At least that way the people after me will be able to read some new things even if I don't get to (although they might be in trouble if they aren't interested in horror or fantasy since that's most of what I've set aside.) I really hope she comes back soon though, I've been looking forward to this for months. :(
Profile Image
Well, I'm next on the list and I LOVE horror and fantasy. I'm also in the same town as you.
Profile Image
I do have about twenty graphic novels that I could use to start a second box, but since I'm already out 20+ graphic novels from the first box (if it is really and truly lost - I'm *really* hoping that fireyfairy is simply on vacation or otherwise unable to access her email, and that's why we haven't heard from her) I'm a little reluctant to do so. Does that make me a greedy person?
Profile Image
I have LOADS of manga at this point {wry grin}. Was thinking of trying a virtual bookbox once I get the danged things reviewed and ready to go, but I could certainly start an actual box as well.
Profile Image
I can contribute some too. But really hope that the real one will resurface.
Profile Image
I'd love to join if you can add me to the list. I live in Southern California.
Thanks!

Can I be added? Thanks!

PM'd you!

Not really directly related to the bookbox...but have ya'll heard that Tokyopop is shutting down its US publishing division? Apparently, they'll still work on their oh-so-successful (not) video/movie production, but manga publishing is getting the ax.

I wrote about it a little bit on my book blog, if anyone wants to pop over there and share their thoughts:
http://fashion-piranha.livejournal.com/138865.html?...
Profile Image

Stalled?

Are we still stalled?
Profile Image
As far as I know, yes. I was next on the list and I have yet to receive the box or hear from fireyfairy. :/
Profile Image
Well, if it goes on much longer, I guess you and I could start the box again.
Profile Image
Apparently, when I attempted to post here letting everyone know the box had been shipped, the site did not load properly, so my post was not submitted. I also had difficulty getting the books I added journaled, but sent one pm to Earth Vs Soup immediately after mailing the box and included the new BCID numbers for my additions to the box, and now I suspect that pm also did not arrive. I just sent a second pm.

When I mailed the box, I was informed that, because it was media mail, and because Earth Vs Soup has a P O box in Alaska, it may take a while longer than usual for the box to reach its destination.

Subsequent to mailing the box, I have been out of town. Upon my return, I saw in my email that various people have been attempting to contact me regarding the box, and then realized my posts/pms did not go through. The box is not stalled and should've reached Earth Vs Soup already or should be arriving very shortly.
Profile Image
I apologize for fearing the worst - I was trying to think of all the things that might have gone wrong, but didn't consider the combination of site issues and a long spell offline! If anything, it was because you usually *do* post updates right away that made the silence seem so puzzling.

Again, glad to hear from you - and I hope this doesn't sour you on manga/graphic novels {rueful grin}.
Profile Image
Awesome, glad to hear from you! I'll keep checking my mail and let you guys know when it gets here. If anybody's sent out books to add to the box, let me know so I can make sure I've included everything when I pass it on to AKSarah.

It's unusual for media mail to take this long (usually it takes about two weeks), but it's certainly not unheard of, especially when there are weather oddities in the rest of the US. If it isn't here on Monday, I'll ask the workers at the post office to check if it's in the back room just in case.

I haven't been able to get a reply from fireyfairy, so I would assume that we're stalled. :(

Earth-VS-Soup and AKSarah - if you guys want to re-start the box, I can send some books up there to help pad it out. I started the box with about 20 books in it, which seemed to be a good size as it wasn't super expensive to ship and allowed a decent variety of books.

Okay, I'll PM you my address. I have about ten books to add, so hopefully all of that will make for a good start of a box. Actually, I might have a few more around here I can include, I'll have to reassess my shelves.

If fireyfairy should come through sometime in the future I'll be sure to post an update, but at this point I'll be pretty surprised if we hear from her again. :/ I keep checking my mail everyday hoping for a package slip, but no such luck. Boo!

I don't know why you would be surprised to hear from me again... I was warned that media mail takes a long time to reach Alaska. I called my post office and actually spoke with the same postal worker who mailed the box for me. He was able to look it up using the mailing information and said it shouldn't arrive any later than May 9, and that window of time was pretty standard for the destination. He let me know that it is currently in transit so, unless it arrived today, it shouldn't be sitting anywhere in your post office.

...

Hey guys, I'm sorry to see that the box is stalling! Hopefully fireyfairy will resurface. If some action needs to be taken to get it going again though, I'm willing to help however I can.

@ k00kaburra: I was shocked to see that was happening! It seemed that everything was going so well. My favorite manga, Axis Powers Hetalia, was being published and everything. Now they canceled the third volume and the fourth was going to be coming out as well, I believe. *sad face*

Okay, looks like we'll be starting a new box since the old one seems to be MIA.

I have about 10 volumes I'll be putting in it for sure (maybe more once I look through my shelves), but if a few people would like to contribute a book or two as well that would be great. If you are interested in sending some volumes to include in this new box, please do! Either reply here or PM me and I'll send you my address. Thanks all, we will persevere! ...Or at least get a new box on it's way. :)

Ok, I have a couple to add to the box. Since we are in the same town, I'll PM you with my addy and cell.

I may have some to donate. Please pm me your addy. I will take a look and see what I have.

She confirmed that the bookbox has been shipped and is en route to Alaska. She was away on a trip and was unable to answer PMs and emails until her return. :)

Glad to hear the good news!

Yep, media mail can take a frustratingly long time to AK...I've mailed things to the lower 48 that have taken almost 2 months!
Profile Image
2 months? Ugh, I hope that isn't the case here! Unfortunately, media mail was the only affordable choice, as I was told my other option would cost over $60.
Profile Image
2 months is a rarity....usually only 2-4 weeks. So it shall arrive soon!

Any updates here?
(I'm assuming not, but I didn't want this thread to fall too far off the top of the forum's pages)

I got the bookbox today! Since tonight is my last final, I should be able to read through some of the volumes and get it moving on to AKSarah reasonably soon. Hooray!

EDIT:
Oh yes, I forgot! It was delivery confirmation #0310 3490 0001 7703 3157. If anyone's curious, these are the books that arrived in the box:

@Large
Girl Got Game Volume 8
Gravitation (Novel)
Gunsmith Cats: The Return of Grey
Jing: King of Bandits Volume 1
Jing: King of Bandits Volume 3
Just My Luck
Kodocha Volume 1
Love Fights Volume 1
Love Fights Volume 2
Love Hina Volume 1
Love Hina Volume 2
Maison Ikkoku Volume 3
Marmalade Boy Volume 1
Ragnarök Volume 3
Same Cell Organism
Witch Volume 2

Also included are some book crossing info cards, magnets, and a catalog of FirstSecond's 2010 Spring graphic novels.
Since wild releases in my town tend not to be found, I'll probably be putting everything that arrived into a new box and passing on the other 10ish books I've been holding on to for the ring. More to choose from for other people, right?

I've noticed that the bookbox has shrunk a little bit since I first sent it out. It's not a big deal, but it did remind me that I perhaps should have described how a book box works in greater detail since we have several new people who have joined us.

This description is from BookCrossings FAQ:
Bookbox - Person #1 gathers together a bunch of books, This can be as few as 8 or 10, or as many as 30 or 40 paperbacks. The books can be themed (sci-fi, chick-lit, romance, children's, etc) or just random books. After posting a message on the Bookring/Ray forum, s/he gathers a list of interested participants. Box is mailed to Person #2, who takes out a couple of books and puts the same amount back in, then mails it to Person #3. Eventually, the box will make it back to Person #1, who has a lot of new books to read!

The key pointer is that the same number of books should be going back into the box as you take out. We want people at the middle and end of the list to have the same variety of books to choose from as the people at the beginning. (Some people will put in more if they happen to have extra books, which is great, but obviously, not required.)

Again, this is my fault, because since I knew that this was the first bookbox for several people I should have posted BookCrossing's guidelines at the beginning.

Thanks guys!

For some reason I can't view fireyfairy's page right now and thus can't send her a message, but I'm trying to contact her before I pass the bookbox on. I hope she reads this as I keep getting error messages each time I try to view her page.

Fireyfairy:
The two books you released into the box (Love Fights volumes 1 & 2) were unlabled (no book crossing IDs anywhere on them.) Earlier you'd sent me a PM asking me to label them for you. The trouble is, I can't do so unless you send me the actual book crossing ID numbers. If I go to their journal pages (the links you sent), I can't view the book crossing IDs. Only the person who registered the book or inputs the book crossing IDs to update the journal of the book can do that. Please send me the ID numbers or post them here so I can label them before I pass the box on.

Edit: Naturally, as soon as I post about it the messaging problem, it goes away. I've sent fireyfairy a message and I'm going to contact AKSarah today about passing the box on.
