A brief history of the BookCrossing team on Kivaby ardachy
February 21, 2011
The BookCrossing team on Kiva are doing their bit to fight poverty globally. Through Kiva and their Field Partners we are lending money to entrepreneurs throughout the world who are trying to help themselves, their families and their communities. You can
read about how this works at http://www.kiva.org/about/how .
Kiva was established in 2005 and the first mention of Kiva on BookCrossing that I found was by beteljooz on 15th May 2006. Lending teams were enabled in August 2008 and Fellraven (STC on Kiva) set up the BookCrossing team on 9th October 2008 with dawni, florafloraflora, Cassiopaeia, welshhelen and bluestocking88 being among the early joiners. I joined on 31st March 2009 as a way of marking my three years on BookCrossing.
The very first loan supported by a team member appears to be to repair a barber shop in Azerbaijan www.kiva.org/lend/68510 . More recently eleven team members lent to a food stall in Tajikstan www.kiva.org/lend/264808 . We have also supported several bookstores including this one in Mongolia www.kiva.org/lend/253831 this one in Palestine www.kiva.org/lend/245559 and this one in Nicaragua www.kiva.org/lend/247186 .
Edwardstreet became our 100th team member on 20th February 2011 and we have made over 1500 loans totalling over $40,000 USD. We would love to have even more members and make it to $50,000 by the teams third birthday 9th October 2011. You will find us here:- http://www.kiva.org/team/bookcrossing/
If you have $25 or equivalent that you could afford to lend to someone in need then please come and join us. The repayment rate currently stands at over 98% so you have a very good chance of getting your money back. This means you can re-lend the money again and again. Re-lending is so much fun! I personally have lent to people in 36 different countries ranging from Afghanistan to Viet Nam and have had almost as much fun with Kiva as I have with BookCrossing so feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
