Weight Loss, Book Loss!

Lose weight, lose a book
by bookwormkt

A few weeks back I decided to join Weight Watchers and lose some weight, as my wobbly bits now have extra wobble. This is a real pain, as I lost about 3 stone (42lbs) a couple of years ago, and 2 stone (28lbs) have crept on again since. I know it will be a long hard slog. I was really anxious about attending meetings, as I have never been to Weight Watchers before. 2 years ago my husband went to meetings and I followed the Points plan with him. This time we have swapped roles! I felt I needed something to motivate me. My husband had stacked a 2lb bag of sugar in his office for every 2lbs weight he lost, to remind himself how much weight he had lost. I have no office at work, but I DO have a LOT of books, and I had joined BookCrossing a week or so before... So I decided to release a book in to the wild for every pound I lose!

Starting day: 16 June 2007: I released 2 at the local gym, just because I had actually made it to the meeting and to the gym!!

23 June: I lost 2lbs weight, but I was busy all week, so I decided last week's 2 books would do for those 2lbs.

30 June: I managed to lose 2.5lbs, so another 2 book would go in to the wild this week. I released one on the counter in the ladies' toilets at the Weight Watchers meeting venue!

5 July: I released another one in the disabled/ladies' toilet at the garage when I took my car for its MOT. Hopefully more will be released over the next few months. Half a book poses a problem!

7 July: Gain/Loss - 0.

14 July: I lost 1.5lbs, but I thought I had put weight on, so I had no books to release at the venue! I will release 2 books this week, taking up the slack on the half a books from 2 weeks ago.

21 July: I realised I still had LAST week's 2 books to release BEFORE today's Weight Watchers meeting. Eek! I was in Otley early to post a parcel, so I left a book (can't think for the life of me which one - Menopausal woman moment!!) in the leaflet stand in the entrance to the Post Office in Otley. I really hope someone finds it and journals it, as it's annoying me that I can't remember. Escaped before anyone tried to hand it back to me. The time at the gym pays off again!!

Next I left Politika, by Tom Clancy, on a bench in the Market Square, which is under a large roof, so hopefully it will be picked up and not get wet. I chose a more male book for this release, as I have left some very girly ones in ladies' toilets, which seemed a bit unfair for all male book readers out there!

I was surprised to learn I had lost a pound this week, in spite of lots of end of term eating occasions and an inability to get to the gym this week. I got my first silver 7, for losing 7 pounds. YIPPEE!! Was almost out of the building when I realised I had 2 books in my bag, so I released 'Sweethearts of the Twilight Lanes' by Luanne Jones, by popping it in a plastic wallet in the entrance hall which was helpfully labeled 'Please take one'. I do hope someone does take it and read it, and maybe even journal it!

Phew, I am worn out with all this subterfuge. It's been fun, though! I am on holiday this week, so hope to eat sensibly, get lots of exercise and have to release some more books next Saturday!

28 July: Lost 1.5 pounds again this week. I have been to the gym twice and done a Pilates class, but I have also eaten at McDonalds twice (a Happy meal burger, cucumber sticks and a smoothie - also have got a Prince Charming and Donkey collectible figure!!) and been to the cinema and stolen some of my children's popcorn! Released a book on the counter in the ladies' toilets at the hall again, so that I have released a book before we leave for holiday tomorrow!

I have had some great suggestions for themes, which I hope to follow up. I think I will keep When I Won a Prize for when I get to my goal weight! I will try to leave the Why Women Need Chocolate book near the chocolate section next time I am at the supermarket. I was intrigued by the idea of releasing books into the wild, as described on www.bookcrossing.com, but needed a spur to actually do it.

I hope that people will find my books and enjoy them, so my loss will be their gain. My body and my bookshelves will thank me for this, too. So, a win, win situation!
