This year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of one of Britain’s best loved and entertaining novels, Barchester Towers [1857], written as part of the Barset Series by Britain's most prolific Victorian author, Anthony Trollope. To celebrate, The Trollope Society today launched what some believe to be the most detailed website ever dedicated to a writer www.anthonytrollope.com. The site brings Trollope’s talent for characterisation, drama and humour to 21st Century life. Ready for a new generation of readers, the site comes complete with stunning new illustrations, interactive challenges, 1500 cross-referenced characters, plot and place profiles, currency converters and quotes of the day.

Trollope Society President, The Rt Hon & Rt Revd Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, commented:

“Trollope was a man of great significance for the written word in England – from his introduction of the post box to the creation of the infamous Mrs Proudie, not to mention many of the most brilliant, entertaining and authentic characters British fiction has ever seen.

“This website has been a labour of love capturing more than 1500 characters from all 47 of his novels. We hope it will bring together Trollope fans from around the world and encourage a new generation to take a serious look at a great writer.”

Alongside the 1500 cross-referenced character profiles the site also offers essays, original and new artwork, e-cards and polls with the option to contribute to the site. The currency calculator was developed to show just how much a Victorian gentleman would be willing to wager, how much an impoverished curate had to live on - and just how much a Victorian writer such as Trollope might earn.

Susan Hampshire, who appeared in the star studded BBC adaptation of The Barchester Chronicles, added:

“Trollope is a wonderful artist, a creator of the most powerful and individual characters and a narrator who achieves a marvellous balance between storyline and domestic comedy.

“Where better to go for a read that is not only delightful but that makes you laugh. I do hope this site brings new readers to the world of Trollope!”

To celebrate the launch and the anniversary there are 50 copies of Barchester Towers to be won on-line courtesy of Penguin Books.

Editor's Note: While BookCrossing is not affiliated with www.anthonytrollope.com, we are proud to note that there are over 400 copies of novels by Anthony Trollope which are wandering the world as BookCrossing books.
