It is so normal for us, a library in town, a library in the district and a library at school.
But for children in Africa this isn't so normal. Fortunatly for some this will change. With the help of many BookCrossers, about 569 children's books have been collected for the children of the Brikama Jeddeh Nursery School in Bakau the Gambia. The purpose? A brand new school library :-)
Nomorecorsa started this unusual way of BookCrossing, she was already a sponsor for the school via the Children In Gambia Foundation with school supplies and other donations. When the founders of the Children In Gambia Foundation told her their wish was to set up a school library, she took action.
Make the world a library, will be a reality with this form of BookCrossing.
Threads on the challenge forum and the Dutch forum made more BookCrossers enthusiastic. Books like "Wind in the Willows", "Philosopher's Stone" and more were collected.
The goal was to send a minimum of 300 English children's books as a Christmas present, for every child attending the Nursery school one book, that way every child could make a start reading books.
But the books and promises to mail boxes of books during September, October and November were overwhelming! Not only the Dutch BookCrossers did their share, Crossers from Germany, Canada, the UK and USA and so on mailboxed their donations to Bakau.
Now the school library can be filled with 569 books!
Not only the children of the Nursery School can read these books, we hope that even older brothers or sisters will start reading!
Children In Gambia Foundation also has a wish for the future, when they have enough funding they want to set up a bibliobus, so they can make the books travel the Gambia, and also create some jobs (a chauffeur and a librarian). And make a lot of people read!
But this is for the (hopefully near) future, there are more important projects right now, like funding education for teens and supporting the Technical School in Banjul.
Nomorecorsa is trying to get English technical books for this school, the school really needs books and teachers' materials.

Een hele bibliotheek bij elkaar crossen

Het is voor ons zo doodnormaal: een bibliotheek in de stad, een bieb in de wijk en een bibliotheek op school. Maar voor kinderen in Afrika is dit helemaal niet zo vanzelfsprekend. Gelukkig gaat daar nu verandering in komen. Met de hulp van vele andere bookcrossers heeft crosser Nomorecorsa zo´n 500 Engelstalige kinderboeken ingezameld voor de kinderen van de Brikama Jeddeh Nursery School in Bakau, Gambia. En daar kan nu een complete schoolbibliotheek mee worden ingericht!
Het initiatief voor deze bijzondere vorm van bookcrossen kwam van Nomorecorsa die zich het lot van deze 6- tot 12-jarige kinderen in Gambia aantrok. Zijzelf sponsorde de school al via Stichting Kinderen in Gambia . Van dat sponsorgeld kunnen schoolspullen voor de kinderen worden gekocht. Toen de organisatoren van de stichting over een bibliotheek begonnen, was Nomorecorsa meteen bereid om daaraan mee te helpen. Van de wereld een bibliotheek maken, wordt met deze vorm van bookcrossen helemaal werkelijkheid.
Draadjes op het challenge forum en het Nederlandse forum zorgden voor nog meer enthousiastelingen. Bookcrossers uit heel Nederland zamelden kinderboeken in; van ‘The wind in the willows’ tot aan ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone’.
Het doel was om zo´n 300 boeken in te zamelen, voor elk kind op de Nursery School één. Zo zou elk kind in ieder geval een begin kunnen maken met lezen. Maar de boeken stroomden binnen in de maanden september, oktober en november. Er zijn zo´n 400 boeken door Nomorecorsa op transport naar Gambia gestuurd, deze zijn inmiddels goed aangekomen bij de school. Ook vanuit het buitenland was er genoeg animo voor de actie. Crossers uit Duitsland, Canada, UK en USA stuurden zelf hun kinderboekjes naar Bakau. En nu met het aantal van 569 boeken! kan de bibliotheek gevuld worden. Niet alleen kunnen de kinderen van deze school naar hartelust lezen; de hoop is dat ook de ouders en oudere broers en zussen zo aan het lezen slaan.
De Stichting Kinderen in Gambia heeft ook een wens voor de langere termijn, een rijdende bibliotheek, een bibliobus. Dit zorgt meteen voor wat werkgelegenheid, doordat een bibliothecaris en chauffeur langs verschillende dorpjes in Gambia kunnen reizen. En hierdoor komen veel meer mensen met boeken in aanraking. Een mooi project voor hopelijk de nabije toekomst…Voor nu zijn er echter belangrijker projecten, zoals het betalen van cursussen en opleidingen voor tieners en jong volwassenen en het draaiend houden van de technische school in Banjul.
Nomorecorsa is al aan haar volgende project begonnen: Het verzamelen van Engelse technische boeken voor de technische school (LTS/MTS niveau) in Banjul. Deze school wordt mede gesponsord door de stichting en heeft een groot gebrek aan technisch onderwijsmateriaal. Schroom daarom niet om oude technische boeken op te sturen.
Zo krijgt elke school en misschien wel elke dorp in Gambia zijn eigen bibliotheek.
