Granville TAFE OBCZ Celebrates the Release of 100 Books

TAFE NSW - South Western Sydney Institute, Granville College has an OBCZ where books have been released for students and staff for the past year.

Granville College was established in 1884 and had over 17,500 enrollments in 2004. This tertiary college offers courses in a variety of technical, industrial and vocational areas.

I support students who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired undertaking courses as varied as hospitality, accounting and heavy auto. I also have courses specifically for Deaf students in computers, driver's ed and tutorial support. Deaf and Hearing Impaired students have traditionally had difficulty in the area of literacy and this is one of the reasons I started the OBCZ here at Granville TAFE.

This year I have released 100 books. I have been ably assisted by my colleagues who support students from non-English speaking backgrounds, those who have been disavantaged as well as other disability consultants and support staff. I have also been supplied with books by CatsAlive (many thanks, Kylie).

I have also released a few boxes of old encyclopaedia, and various kids series, such as Disney Books (these I did not register as there were just too many to label). We have a number of new arrival students, particularly from the Sudan who have appreciated the books to share with their kids.

The OBCZ is in the hallway outside my office where many students and staff pass each day. It has been so exciting to release books and to watch students (and sometimes staff) pick them up.....look around.....read some more.... then tuck the book under their arm or into their bag and walk off........with a huge and sometimes sceptical smile, thinking...who in the world gives away free books?
