A Quick List of Some of our Favorite News and Media Links
by BCNewsletter
October 14, 2005
Each week we try to feature the newest articles and sightings of BookCrossing in the Media. However, there are many great articles out there that have not yet made it to our Media page, but are good indicators of BookCrossing and the cultural phenomenon it has become. We hope to keep this summary updated as new articles come in. Enjoy!

The International Herald Tribune noted "The practice of sending a message in a bottle has gone out of fashion, lost to the decline in ocean travel and rise of surer methods of communicating. But the impulse to reach out to strangers has not disappeared." BookCrossing and a number of other Internet-based ways to reach out to others are mentioned in this September 2005 article, which also appeared in The New York Times.

An Associated Press article from Paris was picked up by nearly 80 newspapers worldwide (at last count), including such notables as the Chicago Tribune and Al-Jazeera. Featured are some of our marvelous Parisian BookCrossers, as well as an interesting follow-up from author Angelo Rinaldi, that the "find" of a manuscript attributed to BookCrossing in this article (and in a previous In the News article of ours) was indeed a "humorous way to disguise a leak of the book, La possibilite d'une ile, which he planned."

BBC Radio loves BookCrossing! See what we mean at these links:

  • Interview with Ron on BBC Radio 2 during the Johnnie Walker Drivetime show available via the BBC 'Listen Again' service here. Scroll through to 17:00 minutes to hear the piece from the start. And later on in the program, you can hear messages to Johnnie from some of our wonderful UK BookCrossers!
  • BBC Radio Shropshire's BookCrossing feature and weekly updates on the Jim Hawkins (aka JimOnTheRadio) Mid Morning show. It is on live after 11:00 AM (BST) every Friday. You can listen live via the web at www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire or tune in if you're in the area on 96FM.
  • BBC Radio Berkshire: Details are in this thread in the Announcement Forum. Click here for the Radio Berkshire website.
  • BBC Radio Coventry and Warwickshire included BookCrossing segment on the Annie Othen Show on 27 September (Listen again service available)

The UK papers have had a grand time with BookCrossing. A bit of the best include:
  • This article. Scroll down to the author's "Rule #2".
  • Author, Viv Groskop, really gets the idea of BC in this article, which includes a description of BookCrossing this way
The concept is finders-keepers meets interactive virtual lending library. The rules are simple. First take a book down from your shelf. It should be one you love. (Ideally, if you ruled the world you would make reading of this book compulsory.)

  • Birmingham
  • PrestonToday, The Times ("Lobbing a sinister-looking black package into a fountain in Trafalgar Square, 20ft or so from a scary knot of armed policemen, it occurs to me that Goebbels and Joe McCarthy may have had a point; a book can be a dangerous thing."

Fresh Cup Magazine an e-zine for specialty coffee and tea professionals, features BookCrossing in their July 2005 issue. Ron and several BookCrossers who manage OBCZs are quoted. Nice article to share with potential OBCZ owners.

July 2005 MegaBookCrossing Coverage in Neuchâtel. From the looks of things there were about as many reporters as BookCrossers there! You can have a look yourself at the newspaper articles here and here, or check out the radio coverage, and there are even TV reports!

Harper's Index finds BookCrossing! The June 2005 Issue featured such important facts as:
"Number of books registered at BookCrossing.com, so the books can be left in public places and found by others: 1,935,000

Number of the books left behind that have been from the Left Behind series: 2,047"

Here's a link to the Index online.
