Creating Fulfulling BC Gatherings: Tips for Every BCer

Many BookCrossers have attended a BC gathering and once they do, they make one of two choices: either come back for more fun, or never return again. Here are some practical tips for every BCer when attending a gathering:

Be aware of who the organiser is and remember to R.S.V.P. -- it is essential for locations requiring bookings but also allows you to be introduced to members you haven’t met before.

Bring books to release – that is the idea of BookCrossing, after all! Yes, register them first and write the BC number inside the book - labels are optional for BC gatherings.

Please take books home with you and journal them! The thrill of receiving a journal alert, even from a BC gathering catch is still very exciting.

Don’t be too picky about which books you take home -- you are not required to read every book you catch! Remember that all the books left over will probably be left at the location. Random catches are ideal for wild releasing.

Chat to other members – they will not bite and are probably just as freaked out as you. BookCrossing is not just a virtual world and most of us are real people. You have two things in common with everyone at the meetup – BookCrossing and the location of the gathering. Ask someone how they found out about BC, where they’ve recently released a book or what they like to read.

A BC gathering does not equal a book club. Certain gatherings may be designed to discuss specific books or books in general. However, the aim of a BC gathering is to meet other BCers and chat about BC. If you’re interested in creating a book club, then consider creating an off-shoot of the BC gathering group.

Give feedback to your organiser regarding the location, day, time and even the activity. Suggestions from members are always valuable.

Consider having themed gatherings for Christmas, St Valentine's Day or even for large book sales in your location.

Use the BC gathering message board and chat with other members. Discuss your ideal release locations and reply to other posts.

BC gatherings are the ideal location to bond with others who understand the thrill of releasing a book, finding a catch and reaching a target. They are also the best method of finding excellent books and wonderful friendships.
