I promised a certain Canadian graphic novelist that I'd buy his two books. I did. This is his most recent.

Well, what an appealing story! It's as if Dorothy ditched Toto and got to bring two friends along and, instead of Oz, they all landed on another planet. A planet with a really neato sky, I might add, and at least one friendly inhabitant so far - a robot that anticipates their needs and seems to want to look after them. My only complaint, so let's get that out of the way, was that it was too short. I wasn't ready for the story to end where it did. To be continued! Ah gee....Where's the fuzzy brown guy pictured on the cover? Von Allan had better get crackin' on volume two is all I can say.

In all seriousness, I think that Stargazer has gobs of potential to be a really exciting adventure series. And, while it appeals to me as a 50 years plus (that's hardly even middle-aged right?) woman, I can imagine that kids, boys and girls, but girls of Marni's age especially will just love it. I suspect if there'd been such a realistic, yet magical and not just a little bit scarey series featuring some pretty darned with it girls when I was a kid, I'd have been all over it.

I love the girls. Their personalities are already clearly evident and although different from each other, I can relate to all of them. With Elora, I share a love of actual stargazing (incidentally instilled in me by a male school teacher when I was eleven. This teacher used to take four of us (me and three girlfriends) up into a pasture in the middle of the night to look at the stars. I learned more about astronomy in a few months than I learned about anything else in all the years I spent at school. I can't imagine a male teacher daring to provide the same experience for a bunch of pre-teen girls nowadays. Pity.)

I can relate to Marni's connection with her grandma. My grandparents were fun adventuresome folks too. I was lucky to have them in my life (and my children's lives) well into adulthood. I can't imagine how devastated I'd be to lose them early like Marni did. And Sophie, well she's just funky and spunky and just the sort of adventuresome spark you need in your life.

I'm really looking forward to the continued adventures of this threesome.

And while I may have been sulking to find the end of volume one where I did, I was delighted to find the "Extras" following. Especially neat was to be able to look into the mind of the author/artist as he created this story in the "Brainstorming" section. Some super posters and character sketches in the back too.

This is not really my thing, not to say really not my thing. Way to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or Wizzard of Oz for me, both I couldn't get anything out of. I'm really not fantasy guy.
I liked the first part though, the room of Marny is so detailed, you can wonder around in it for some time. I like the picknick cloth becoming the sail of the boat.

I enjoyed this story. However,it does have a feel that it is for kids, luckily in many ways I am a big kid. I loved adventure stories when I was a kid and Marni kind of reminded me of myself when I was that age. The fact that she was close to her grand-mom hit home as well. However, I do feel that the story was a bit slow paced and should have been longer. The art work I found to be ok. Would I read vol 2 of Stargazer, well yes I would.
* I liked the extras in the back of the book as well. Interesting to see how he got his ideas.
It is going on to lucy-lemon tomorrow.

Oh dear :-( I was planning on coming online to make a JE apologising for having had the book for almost a month and not having had a chance to get round to them. And then I noticed that I didn't make an initial JE! Sorry. On a brighter note, I'm hoping to be able to send them off to the next person within a week or so.

Thanks for sharing this graphic novel, Pooker3. It was an interesting little book, but was`t totally awesome for me. The art is ok and the story concept a good one, but it dragged a little for me. The robot is cute....
Anyways, I have 2 teen children that I showed this book to thinking they might want to read it since they both love graphic novels, but it didn`t grab them.
All that being said it`s nice to have another Canadian talent to watch as he continues to publish and evolve his work.
I will be mailing this off to aliaschase tomorrow.

I quite enjoyed this comic book! It was very imaginative and mysterious. It certainly ends in suspense, and hope to read the next volume, as I want to know what happens to the characters... There is also a nice bonus at the end of the book, with notes and drawings from the author, that gave a glimpse into all the work that goes into constructing and putting together a graphic novel. I got this in the mail as a BookRing, and will be sending it off to the next person on the list sometime next week...

Home! Thanks everyone for participating. And thank you aliaschase for sending the book home. As I told aliaschase, I plan to "donate" this book to a bookseller in town in an effort to convince him to stock (& support) Canadian graphic novelists.
