I must confess that when I started reading this book I doubted that I would finish it. Mary Gooch is a morbidly obese woman and, frankly, while I no longer have the svelte cougar-like form of my youth, neither am I overweight. I really did not think that I could relate to a person who managed to eat herself up to close to 400 pounds! And Mary readily admits to answering the call of the Kenmore (the refrigerator) and does not pretend it's something hormonal or the size of her bones.

When Mary was her most attractive, she had managed to snag herself a hubby, Jimmy Gooch, but once married she let herself go again and they've grown apart. Now on the eve of her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, "Gooch" doesn't show up to the party. Mary is devastated, embarrassed and frightened.

When she realized Gooch might not be coming home, Mary decides to abandon her small cocooned world and heads off into the great unknown to look for him. On her travels she experiences all kinds of people and a dizzying course of events such that whether or not she finds "Gooch" is secondary to finding Mary.

While I did think that some of the things that happened to Mary were a tad unlikely, I found myself liking her more and more and rooting for her.

I ultimately came to a most satisfactory ending to the story and a resolve to be more adventuresome myself!

A nice read.
