Journal Entry 1 by snoopy56 from Ormesby St Margaret with Scratby, Norfolk United Kingdom on Thursday, December 11, 2014
I've always been a big fan of Libby Purves' journalism but this is the first of her novels that I've read. It's the story of a family who are going through what could be described as a mid-life crisis. The action focuses mainly on the mother, who I suspect is very largely based on the author herself, and her son who seems acutely aware of what is happening to his parents and is badly affected by it. Taking place in London and Norfolk I enjoyed the descriptions of the winter landscape and the characters but especially the depiction of the beautiful gallopers.
Passing on to my bookcrossing friend Daffodil-2 when we meet for coffee.
Given to me today by snoopy56 when we met for coffee. Will look forward to reading it as I have read and enjoyed another book by the same author.
REVIEW: I enjoyed this book which I thought was well-written. It had me in tears at times and I thought the author had a good insight into the emotions felt when a child goes missing and also the conflicting emotions felt by a whole family when the parents are going through a marriage crisis.
Although mobile phones are such a big part of everyday life now, its amazing how differently a story unfolds, such as in this book, when they either don't exist or are in their infancy and not everyone has one.
I also enjoyed the touches of humour e.g. "She would really have liked to speak to Daniel (her husband) if only to ask him whether it was the A14 or A45 she needed to change onto at Ipswich". A girl after my own heart!"
I am reserving this book for two friends who I think will enjoy it.
