Emil, a German veteran of the Great War, returns home to a disturbed nation. Inflation and unemployment edge the country near collapse. Emil joins the resistance and ultimately loses everything. Hannah, a Russian Jew, lives in London. She then meets Emil and together they start a life together. Emil is eventually interned in an Australian Camp and Hannah with love and courage travels there to help the loves of her life. Many struggles and sadness deter their lives but the romance lives on despite the currents of history.
