Picked up from a campsite near Doheny State Beach yesterday. A camper had placed several books on a camp chair with a sign that said to take some, leave some.

When I first started reading this book, it seemed familiar. I thought I might have read it before. As I continued through I was certain. Yet it was worth reading a second time. I did not remember some significant details, and it was enjoyable to read.

Kathryn Lyons hears a knock on the door in the middle of the night. Her husband Jack is a pilot, so it is a call she has feared over the years. And yes, he has gone down with his plane.

The person bringing the news is a union representative, Robert Hart. He made tracks to get there before the official airline representatives did, to make sure, it appears, that Kathryn does not say anything that would suggest that Jack did anything inappropriate before the flight. He tells her he is there to support her.

Kathryn soon learns that there is some question of why the plane went down, and that her husband may have had something to do with it. That it may have been suicide. Kathryn can't believe this possibility. As time goes on she happens upon odd little things that suggest that Jack was not the person she thought he was.

The story is very much about Jack but perhaps even more about how to grieve. We don't ever really know someone else.
