I'm claiming this slightly-battered ARC from the Far East bookbox. I haven't read anything in the "Ava Lee" series before, but the idea of a forensic accountant rather tickled me!

Later: OK, this was... interesting. I should have known that the story would not restrict our heroine's activities to working on ledgers somewhere - no, she gets forced into some direct confrontations with a gang of dangerous criminals, and winds up more directly involved than she'd like. There are many reasons why this came about, and also why Ava gets away with activities that really should have resulted in the arrival of a SWAT team if it happened in the US, but I admit I wasn't thrilled with the action-heroine swerve.

The story opens with Ava being awakened from a drowse by her girlfriend - only to learn that her half-brother's on the phone with a request for her help. (At this point I was convinced that the girlfriend was dooooomed - so often a love-interest is only introduced to provide a hostage/plot-point - but at least in this book she's safe.) The setup was OK, though I did find myself skimming a good deal over the minutiae of Ava's daily life, work habits, etc. - and some of the "uh-oh, organized crime is involved!" bits too. In fact, I skimmed quite a bit, from which I deduce that the author's style and/or the genre really wasn't grabbing me. But I kept looking for examples of a forensic accountant at work, and... didn't find many; perhaps she uses her professional skills more in the previous books in the series {wry grin}.
