Enjoyable so far. Politically astute, laugh out loud funny and a bit filthy.

I'll go as far as to say this is a better book than Lanark and possibly more relevant a read now than at the time it was originally published. Or at least, given the political aspects of the narrative, once again just as relevant. Gray accurately and unflinchingly picks out the positive and negative aspects of the human race as a whole whilst concentrating largely on that part he knows best - those that live in Scotland and are historically from there.

The central character is both as flawed and 'perfect' at varying times as any of us can be, as are the rest of the individuals that exist in the 'real' part of the story. If more people had his level of insight into themselves, let alone such an understanding of how the world works and the will to alter it for the better, things would probably improve if they were willing and able to make the hard choices required. Unfortunately complacency and/or the belief in a quick fix without greater pain than is currently being felt (leading to disgruntlement) is still the order of the day.
