Set in a remote area of Vancouver Island, this is the latest book in the Corporal Holly Martin series. I enjoyed the characters and setting of this police procedural and plan to read more in the series. I've reserved this for Pooker3, winner of the Canadian Literature Sweepstakes.

Well now I'm intrigued. This showed up in my mailbox yesterday and I'd never heard of the series or its author. How exciting! Love the title. I'm going to try to read this in time to release it this year seeing as it fits perfectly with gypsysmom's theme for the 2013 Canada Day release challenge.

Thank you, mathgirl40!

I devoured this book over the weekend. I should have been out releasing books for the Canada Day challenge or at least out mowing my yard, but rain on Sunday made it just too easy to postpone those things in favour of a good read.

Mysteries and thrillers are not the books I will usually pick for myself to read, but I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed this one. One of its pluses is the fact that the sleuth is for once a woman! Holly Martin is the commanding officer and one of two women at a three person RCMP detachment on Vancouver island. Ann is the other woman. Ann is more senior to Holly and perhaps earned the command here but a disability meant that she was put on desk duty and Holly won her spot. Chipper Singh is the sole male in the detachment. A minority he is being male and Sikh, but a chauvinist he is not. The three officers have a close and trusting relationship and rely on the advice and judgment of each other.

I enjoyed the fact that these characters have their faults which are known and respected by the others and thus endear them to each other and the reader. Holly for example is at times unsure of herself. Ann has a drinking problem (off the job not on). Perhaps Chipper has the fewest obvious faults but in the middle of the book he is suddenly removed from the detachment and put under investigation for sexual assault!

This book is a nice easy read and the clues to the mystery obvious to the reader if not immediately to the police. One of the issues I have with most mystery novels is that clues are too vague or confusing that I have to work too hard to understand what is going on. As I am a fairly lazy reader that in itself will put me off finishing. So, it may well be that a mystery lover will consider the clues in this mystery too obvious, but it all worked for me.

I enjoyed the lush rainforest setting in this book and could well imagine the terror of the victims being assaulted in the dark seaside parks and the difficulties for police in finding clues when they'd be buried or washed away by rain or tides within the day.

This is actually the third in a the Holly Martin series, so I'm going to have to be on the lookout for the 1st and 2nd as well as the next in the series. There are some interesting threads in this story that I assume began in the earlier books and, as they've not been resolved yet, must continue into the next book. For example Holly Martin's mother apparently disappeared a decade ago and no one knows what happened to her. I want to know! Also a replacement for Chipper showed up in this book, making for three female constables at this attachment. Ashley is brash and insensitive and a thorn in the side of Holly and yet she does seem to have some redeeming qualities. I wonder what will happen for her.

All in all an enjoyable read. Thanks mathgirl40. I'll be releasing this soon for the Canada Day challenge.
