Ninth Moon (November)
Except for a few lost fireflies
the summer palace is deserted
the sky is water
yellow bamboos
cool pools
dead lotus
the moon shines on the gold rings of the gates
chilly garden
empty galleries
blank white sky
frost waking in the wind
autumn leaves, gorgeous as brocades
in heaps along the roads
no watchman at the palace
to announce
the brilliant dawn
ravens croak by the brass well
as the kola leaves spin down.
From 12 poems on the months, Li Ho, Page 133
The Tang Dynasty which ranged from 618 to 907 A.D. ushered in a Golden Age of Chinese poetry. American poet David Young translates five of the major poets here: Wang Wei, Li Po, Tu Fu. Li Ho and Li Shang-yin.
