Gli ebrei che negli anni del Risorgimento si erano "fatti italiani" più rapidamente dei loro concittadini, negli anni del fascismo videro le loro identità e le loro vite progressivamente limitate, sopraffatte, annientate. Essi erano docenti universitari e merciai ambulanti, osservanti e laici, italiani sin da Roma antica e stranieri, sionisti e nazionalisti italiani, fascisti e comunisti; unica fu invece la persecuzione antisemita a impostazione raziale che li colpì.
