I never thought a book about a hostage situation could be a beautiful story, and then I read Bel Canto. What started as a birthday party with dignitaries and high-powered businessmen turns into a hostage nightmare for the guests. Over the course of the next few months, relationships are built between the guests and even between the captors and guests. They have built their own society and have a daily routine in which everyone has become accustomed to and comfortable with.
Ann Patchett tells the story with an omniscient narrator using a languid pace which allows the reader to become the various characters in the novel, understanding individual passions and motivations. It is through the eyes of the various characters the reader is inserted in the house with the hostages, and becomes attached to this misfit group of people who have become, for lack of a better word, family.
I loved this story. It was beautifully written and is a reminder that even in bad situations, you can always find some good.
